BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying

Whenever The Wise Mothman enters or attacks, each player gets a rad counter.

Whenever one or more nonland cards are milled, put a +1/+1 counter on each of up to X target creatures, where X is the number of nonland cards milled this way.

Guide

Gameplan

Stack rad counters on yourself with The Wise Mothman's enter/attack triggers, then let the rad mechanic mill you each turn to feed the second ability, dropping +1/+1 counters across your board. You snowball a wide, growing army while also milling opponents into decks, closing games with oversized creatures, counter payoffs, or self-mill graveyard value.

Strengths

  • Turns the otherwise-symmetric rad downside into a powerful engine that grows your whole board every upkeep
  • Generates two distinct value axes (mill triggers + +1/+1 counters) from one cheap 4-mana flyer
  • Sultai colors give access to the best ramp, card advantage, and recursion in the format
  • Rewards self-mill, so 'losing' cards to the yard fuels reanimation and graveyard payoffs

Weaknesses

  • Rad counters also help opponents, and you can mill yourself out if you stack too many without payoff
  • Removal-heavy of the commander stalls the engine since the counter ability is tied to it
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and counter-removal effects like Hex Parasite or wraths
  • Slower starts compared to dedicated combo decks; needs the board to survive

Key Cards

  • The Wise Mothman — The engine itself—distributes rad counters and converts milled nonland cards into a flood of +1/+1 counters.
  • Altar of Dementia — Sacrifice creatures to mill yourself, triggering huge +1/+1 counter distributions and acting as a backup wincon.
  • Hardened Scales — Doubles the counter payoff, turning each mill trigger into a much faster board snowball.
  • Mesmeric Orb — Forces constant milling, supercharging the counter ability while filling your graveyard.
  • Eternal Witness — Recurs the strong nonland cards you self-mill, converting the downside into raw card advantage.
  • The Mimeoplasm — Loves your stocked graveyard and can become a massive threat alongside your counter synergies.

Upgrade Path

Add counter doublers (Branching Evolution, Doubling Season) and proliferate (Evolution Sage, Flux Channeler) to multiply the payoff, plus repeatable mill outlets like Mesmeric Orb and Altar of Dementia. Lean into graveyard recursion (Eternal Witness, Muldrotha, Genesis) so milled bombs are an asset rather than a loss, and tighten the mana with fast rocks and Sultai duals. Add protection like Heroic Intervention and Lightning Greaves to keep the commander engine online.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beating down with a wide board of oversized +1/+1 countered creatures, many with flying or evasion
  • ▸Milling opponents out via Altar of Dementia, rad counters, and mass-mill effects
  • ▸Comboing a big counter payoff with proliferate or counter doublers for game-ending stats
  • ▸Reanimating bombs from your self-milled graveyard for overwhelming value

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Every mill trigger spreads counters, so counter doublers and proliferate payoffs scale enormously.
  • Self-Mill / Reanimator — Rad counters constantly dump your library, fueling reanimation and graveyard-value engines.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice-and-mill outlets like Altar of Dementia pair sac value with counter triggers.
  • Mill / Combo — You can pivot rad counters and mill engines into milling opponents out as an alternate win.
