The Commander

This spell can't be countered.

Trample

Thrun can't be the target of nongreen spells your opponents control or abilities from nongreen sources your opponents control.

During your turn, Thrun has indestructible.

Guide

Gameplan

Thrun is a resilient mono-green beater that demands a deck built to abuse his protection. Ramp into him early, then attach equipment, auras, or pump effects and swing for trample damage that's hard to interact with. Win through repeated, unstoppable combat damage while green's ramp and big threats overwhelm the board.

Strengths

  • Nearly unkillable on your turn — indestructible plus hexproof from nongreen sources makes him a premier Voltron carrier
  • Can't be countered, so he reliably resolves through control decks
  • Trample lets him push through chump blockers and pairs perfectly with pump and double-strike effects
  • Mono-green gives access to the best ramp in the format for fast, consistent starts

Weaknesses

  • Vulnerable on opponents' turns to green removal, sacrifice effects, and -X/-X
  • Edicts, forced sacrifice, and 'all players sacrifice' bypass his protections entirely
  • Mono-green lacks interaction, card draw flexibility, and ways to deal with fliers or recurring threats
  • Voltron strategies are inherently slow and can fold to a single board wipe or fast combo deck before you connect

Key Cards

  • Shizo, Death's Storehouse — Wait—this is black; instead use cards that grant evasion and trample to ensure Thrun connects.
  • Rancor — Recurring trample-and-pump aura that comes back each time Thrun dies, perfect for a hexproof Voltron threat.
  • Shadowspear — Cheap equipment granting trample and lifelink while stripping hexproof/indestructible from blockers.
  • Berserk — Doubles Thrun's power for a likely lethal trample swing since his indestructibility ignores the end-of-turn sacrifice on your turn.
  • Blackblade Reforged — Scales Thrun's power with your land count for explosive commander-damage kills.
  • Heroic Intervention — Protects your whole board and gives hexproof, covering Thrun's weakness on opponents' turns and during wipes.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crawler, Carpet of Flowers) and cheap protective instants (Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Snakeskin Veil) to survive the turns Thrun is exposed. Lean into low-cost evasion equipment and pump (Shadowspear, Loxodon Warhammer, Berserk) plus reach against fliers (Vivien, Monsters' Advocate), and round out with green's best ramp and a Craterhoof Behemoth/Pathbreaker Ibex finisher for the backup go-wide kill.

  • ▸Overwhelming opponents with trample beats plus a board of green fatties
  • ▸Berserk or double-strike enabling a one-shot kill

Archetypes

  • Voltron — His indestructibility and selective hexproof make him the ideal recipient of equipment and auras for commander-damage kills.
  • Stompy/Big Green — Mono-green ramp lets you deploy Thrun fast and back him with a wide board of large creatures.
  • Mono-Green Ramp — Reliable mana acceleration powers out Thrun and expensive payoffs ahead of curve.
