BuildCard details

The Commander

When Tombstone enters, return target Villain card from your graveyard to your hand.

Villain spells you cast cost {1} less to cast.

Guide

Gameplan

Tombstone is a mono-black Villain typal payoff: flood the board with Villain creatures, discount them with the {1}-off cost reduction, and grind the opponents out with attrition and recursion. Cast and recur Tombstone to rebuy your best Villain from the graveyard, then convert a wide board into a lethal swing or drain.

Strengths

  • Built-in card advantage and recursion every time Tombstone enters, abusable with flicker and recast effects
  • Cost reduction makes a Villain-heavy curve deploy threats fast and out-tempo opponents
  • Mono-black gives access to the deepest pool of tutors, removal, and reanimation in the format
  • Resilient to board wipes since you can return key Villains from the graveyard

Weaknesses

  • Tribal payoffs are thin and new, so the deck leans heavily on its Villain count to stay consistent
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantments and lacks efficient instant-speed interaction with the stack
  • Commander-dependent recursion means heavy commander tax under repeated removal
  • Single color limits ramp and color-fixing flexibility compared to multicolor builds

Key Cards

  • Phyrexian Reclamation — Repeatable graveyard recursion that rebuys Villains and chains with Tombstone's grind plan.
  • Liliana, Dreadhorde General — Generates bodies and refills your hand, fueling a wide Villain board for go-wide finishes.
  • Bolas's Citadel — Turns your life total into raw card advantage, accelerating a low-curve discounted Villain deck.
  • Whisper, Blood Liturgist — Reanimates your biggest Villains for free, sidestepping the cost reduction limits on the priciest threats.
  • Skullclamp — Cheap card engine that draws two off small Villain tokens and dying creatures to never run out of gas.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana like Dark Ritual and Jet Medallion plus more tutors (Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Intent) to find your best Villains consistently. Lean into a tighter aristocrats package with Blood Artist, Bastion of Remembrance, and free sacrifice outlets so a board wipe becomes a kill, and add flicker or repeated recast effects to abuse Tombstone's recursion trigger every turn.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Going wide with discounted Villains and finishing via a swing or an anthem effect
  • ▸Aristocrats drain through sacrifice payoffs like Blood Artist effects and Zulaport Cutthroat
  • ▸Reanimating an oversized threat and beating down
  • ▸Grinding the table out of resources, then closing with recurring value creatures

Archetypes

  • Villain Typal — Tombstone's cost reduction and recursion directly reward packing the deck with Villain creatures.
  • Aristocrats — Mono-black sacrifice and drain payoffs convert a recurring, expendable Villain board into damage.
  • Reanimator — Cheap recursion and reanimation spells return high-impact Villains that the discount alone can't fully enable.
  • Attrition Control — Black's removal suite plus repeatable card advantage lets you out-grind the table over a long game.
