BuildCard details

The Commander

When Toph enters, earthbend X, where X is the amount of mana spent to cast her.

Land creatures you control have double strike.

Guide

Gameplan

Turn your lands into giant double-striking creatures and beat down. Cast Toph for as much mana as possible to dump a big pile of +1/+1 counters onto a land via earthbend, then animate more lands and swing for lethal commander damage and trample.

Strengths

  • Lands-as-creatures sidestep traditional creature removal and board wipes that target nonland permanents
  • Double strike doubles all combat damage AND combat-trigger value, turning one big land into a one-shot threat
  • Earthbend X scales with ramp, rewarding the green mana glut you already build
  • Counters on lands stick around and stack across multiple earthbend effects

Weaknesses

  • Animating lands exposes your mana base to creature removal, Wrath effects, and edicts — losing lands sets you back hard
  • Without animation enablers Toph's static ability does nothing on its own
  • Mass land destruction or land-targeted removal (Strip Mine, Wasteland, Beast Within) is devastating
  • GR lacks card draw and protection, so a single answer to your one attacker can stall you

Key Cards

  • Nissa, Who Shakes the World — Doubles green mana from Forests and animates them as 0/0s that earthbend and counters turn into double-striking monsters.
  • The Mending of Dominaria — Mass land animation chapter turns your whole mana base into attackers that all gain double strike from Toph.
  • Rishkar's Expertise — Massive counter-loaded lands make this a huge draw spell plus a free follow-up cast.
  • Khalni Heart Expedition — Cheap ramp that also feeds the mana-spent calculation when recasting Toph after a board wipe.
  • Crucible of Worlds — Lets you replay fetchlands and recover from the land destruction this deck is weak to.
  • Rampaging Baloths — Landfall payoffs and ramp keep the engine fueled while you build a lethal land.

Upgrade Path

Add counter doublers like Doubling Season and Hardened Scales to make earthbend X explode, plus mana doublers (Mana Reflection, Zendikar Resurgent) to inflate Toph's cast value. Lean into protection — Heroic Intervention, Snakeskin Veil, and Boots/Greaves — so your animated lands survive removal, and include reach via Rishkar's Expertise and Greater Good for the card advantage GR otherwise lacks.

Win Conditions

  • ▸One-shotting opponents with a massive double-striking, trampling animated land
  • ▸Wide land animation turning every land into a double-strike attacker for a lethal alpha strike
  • ▸Voltron commander damage from Toph herself with trample and counter buffs

Archetypes

  • Lands — Toph rewards heavy land ramp and turns the mana base itself into the win condition.
  • Voltron — A single earthbended land with double strike kills via commander-style trample beats quickly.
  • +1/+1 Counters — Earthbend X and counter-doublers pile value onto animated lands.
  • Aggro — GR midrange beatdown using oversized double-striking creature-lands as the offense.
