The Commander

Deathtouch

Whenever this creature enters or transforms into Trystan, Callous Cultivator, mill three cards. Then if there is an Elf card in your graveyard, you gain 2 life.

At the beginning of your first main phase, you may pay {B}. If you do, transform Trystan.

Deathtouch

Whenever this creature transforms into Trystan, Penitent Culler, mill three cards, then you may exile an Elf card from your graveyard. If you do, each opponent loses 2 life.

At the beginning of your first main phase, you may pay {G}. If you do, transform Trystan.

Guide

Gameplan

Trystan is a self-milling Golgari Elf engine that loops between its two faces each turn—paying {B} to flip to the Culler drains opponents and exiles an Elf from the yard, while {G} flips back to gain life and refill the graveyard. You play out cheap Elves and graveyard payoffs, mill yourself for value, then leverage that fueled graveyard for recursion, reanimation, or a stream of incidental drain.

Strengths

  • Repeatable self-mill that feeds reanimation, delve, and graveyard synergies
  • Built-in incremental life drain and gain that grinds out value over long games
  • Cheap 3-mana deathtouch body that pressures combat and trades up
  • Two-sided flexibility lets you tune toward lifegain or aggression each turn

Weaknesses

  • Drain and life payoffs are slow—only 2 per flip, so it's not a fast clock
  • Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) hits both mill and recursion
  • No evasion or protection; the body dies to most removal and stalls Voltron plans
  • Mana-hungry: flipping every turn taxes your development

Key Cards

  • Wirewood Symbiote — Untaps an Elf and lets you reuse enter/transform triggers while protecting Trystan from removal.
  • Skullclamp — Turns your cheap dying Elves into a card-draw engine that refuels both faces.
  • Meren of Clan Nel Toth — Reanimates the creatures Trystan mills, converting self-mill into a recursion machine.
  • Elvish Archdruid — Anthems your Elves and produces massive mana to fund repeated transforms and big plays.
  • Syr Konrad, the Grim — Converts every mill and graveyard exile into direct damage, dramatically scaling your drain.
  • Priest of Forgotten Gods — Sacrifices spare Elf tokens for drain, ramp, and removal that stacks with Trystan's life loss.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Three Visits, Nature's Lore) and Elf ramp like Priest of Titania to flip both ways each turn without falling behind. Build toward a payoff that scales with mill and death—Syr Konrad, Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat—and add tutors (Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor) plus protection like Heroic Intervention. Finish with a reusable combo or Craterhoof finisher so the slow drain converts into a closing turn.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Incremental drain from Trystan's transforms combined with Syr Konrad or Blood Artist effects
  • ▸Overrunning with a buffed Elf army via Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede
  • ▸Reanimating a large threat and beating down
  • ▸Sacrifice-loop combos draining the table with token generators

Archetypes

  • Elf Tribal — Trystan is an Elf payoff and enabler, rewarding a wide Elfball board with lifegain and drain.
  • Aristocrats — Self-mill plus expendable Elves fuels sacrifice loops that drain opponents alongside Trystan.
  • Reanimator — Constant milling stocks the graveyard with bombs to reanimate cheaply.
  • Graveyard Value/Midrange — Both faces grind incremental advantage from a loaded graveyard over time.
