BuildCard details

The Commander

Ulasht enters with a +1/+1 counter on it for each other red creature you control and a +1/+1 counter on it for each other green creature you control.

{1}, Remove a +1/+1 counter from Ulasht: Choose one —

• Ulasht deals 1 damage to target creature.

• Create a 1/1 green Saproling creature token.

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with cheap red and green creatures to make Ulasht enter huge, then convert its counters into removal pings or a swarm of Saprolings. You win by going wide with tokens and counter synergies or by leveraging Ulasht as a repeatable, flexible engine for damage and bodies.

Strengths

  • Scales directly with your creature count, often entering as a 6/6 or bigger
  • Flexible counter-removal mode handles small creatures and builds a token army
  • Cheap to recast and rebuild thanks to a low mana value
  • Naturally synergizes with both +1/+1 counter and tokens themes

Weaknesses

  • Counters only fuel one ability use per counter, so the engine drains quickly
  • ETB size depends on having a developed board first
  • Lacks evasion and built-in protection, so it dies to spot removal
  • Ping mode only deals 1 damage, weak against larger threats

Key Cards

  • Hardened Scales — Multiplies the counters Ulasht enters with, giving you far more ammo for its abilities.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles both Ulasht's entering counters and the Saproling tokens it creates.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Each token or creature triggers counter accumulation across your board, snowballing fast.
  • Parallel Lives — Doubles the Saproling tokens generated by Ulasht's second mode.
  • Purphoros, God of the Forge — Turns every Saproling and creature you make into direct damage to all opponents.
  • Pir, Imaginative Rascal — Adds an extra counter to Ulasht and supports the broader counters package.

Upgrade Path

Lean into counter doublers (Hardened Scales, Doubling Season) and token doublers (Parallel Lives, Anointed Procession) so Ulasht enters bigger and produces more value per activation. Add payoffs like Purphoros and Impact Tremors plus an overrun effect such as Craterhoof Behemoth or Pathbreaker Ibex to convert the wide board into lethal. Improve ramp and protection (Heroic Intervention, Lightning Greaves) to keep the engine online against removal.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Going wide with Saprolings and pumping the team with an anthem or overrun effect
  • ▸Damage payoffs like Purphoros or Impact Tremors triggering off token creation
  • ▸Sacrificing tokens to aristocrat drainers like Blood Artist for incremental kills

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Ulasht enters loaded with counters and counter doublers turn it into a massive engine.
  • Tokens — The Saproling-making mode plus token doublers fuels a go-wide strategy.
  • Aristocrats — Endless Saprolings make ideal sacrifice fodder for drain and value engines.
