At the beginning of each upkeep, if a player cast two or more spells last turn, transform Ulrich.

Guide

Gameplan

Ulrich is a Gruul werewolf tribal beatdown commander who flips into a 6/6 fighter and pumps your team. You build out a pack of Werewolves, control the flip cycle with spell timing, and smash through the table with big bodies and fight removal. Win by attacking with an overwhelming pack while Ulrich clears blockers.

Strengths

  • Two-sided value: enters/flips for +4/+4 and fights when on the back side
  • Anchors a focused Werewolf tribal theme with real payoffs
  • Gruul ramp lets you deploy Ulrich early and recur him cheaply
  • Built-in repeatable removal via the fight trigger

Weaknesses

  • Flip condition is awkward in multiplayer—you can't fully control whether anyone casts spells
  • No card advantage or recursion in the command zone
  • Werewolf tribe is shallow and fragile to board wipes
  • Mono-creature plan folds to sweepers and flying/evasive defenses you can't block

Key Cards

  • Tovolar, Dire Overlord — Werewolf lord that draws cards and forces transforms, giving the deck consistency and a flip enabler.
  • Immerwolf — Anthem for Werewolves and stops your night-side creatures from flipping back, locking Ulrich onto his alpha side.
  • Waxing Moon — Instant-speed transform to flip Ulrich during combat for a surprise fight and trigger his abilities on demand.
  • Kessig Wolf Run — Adds reach and pseudo-fight pressure, turning excess mana into lethal trample damage.
  • Cryptolith Rite — Werewolves tap for mana, accelerating your tribal board and big spells.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient ramp (Birds of Paradise, Rampant Growth, Cultivate) and Werewolf transform enablers like Arlinn Kord and Howlpack Resurgence to stabilize the flip cycle. Improve resilience with protection (Heroic Intervention) and recursion, and pivot toward a faster Gruul stompy core if the Werewolf shell proves too shallow. Top-end haste and overrun effects like Craterhoof Behemoth or Xenagos, God of Revels turn the pack into reliable lethal.

  • Werewolf Tribal — Ulrich rewards a critical mass of Werewolves with lords, flip synergies, and pack-wide aggression.
  • Gruul Aggro/Stompy — Big green creatures plus Ulrich's +4/+4 and fight removal push fast, efficient beatdown.
  • Fight/Removal Midrange — Ulrich's transform-fight plus green fight spells let you grind down opposing creatures.
