The Commander

Firebending 1 (Whenever this creature attacks, add {R}. This mana lasts until end of combat.)

Lesson spells you cast cost {1} less to cast.

Guide

Gameplan

Uncle Iroh is an aggressive Gruul midrange/ramp commander: attack to trigger Firebending for extra red mana that fuels big plays mid-combat, while leaning on cheaper Lesson spells for value and selection. You curve out creatures, swing in early, and use the Firebending mana plus discounts to overwhelm before opponents stabilize.

Strengths

  • Free repeatable ramp every combat via Firebending, enabling explosive post-combat plays
  • Cost reduction makes Lesson spells efficient card advantage and utility in a usually card-hungry color pair
  • Cheap three-mana body that contributes to the board the turn it lands
  • Gruul gives access to elite ramp, haste enablers, and burn-based reach

Weaknesses

  • Firebending mana only exists during combat, so it's awkward without things to spend it on mid-fight
  • Reliant on attacking, making it vulnerable to fog, mass removal, and blockers/Stax
  • Lesson synergies are shallow in red-green, limiting how much the second ability matters
  • No built-in evasion or protection, and the commander dies to any spot removal

Key Cards

  • Xenagos, God of Revels — Doubles power and grants haste, turning a Firebending attacker into a one-shot threat.
  • Mascot Exhibition — A premier Lesson payoff that floods the board and gets cheaper under Iroh's discount.
  • Rishkar's Expertise — Massive card draw off a big attacker, and the Firebending mana helps cast it post-combat.
  • Cragganwick Cremator — Aggressive reach piece that benefits from the haste/attack-centric plan.
  • Lightning Greaves — Protects and hastes Iroh so you can attack immediately and reliably trigger Firebending.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and haste enablers (Sol Ring, Lightning Greaves, Fervor) so Iroh attacks the turn it lands and converts Firebending mana every combat. Lean into mana sinks that pay off mid-combat—double-strike or extra-combat effects (Aggravated Assault, Combat Celebrant) and instant-speed pump—plus stronger payoffs like Craterhoof Behemoth and Rishkar's Expertise. Finally, run targeted protection (Heroic Intervention, Snakeskin Veil) to keep Iroh on the field and the engine humming.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swinging with a buffed Iroh or large hasty creatures for lethal commander/combat damage
  • ▸Overrun effects (Craterhoof Behemoth, Pathbreaker Ibex) after building a board
  • ▸Burn and reach spells fueled by extra Firebending mana
  • ▸Card advantage from Lessons snowballing into an unbeatable board

Archetypes

  • Gruul Aggro/Beatdown — Firebending rewards committing to the attack with extra mana to extend pressure.
  • Ramp/Big Mana — Combat-based mana acceleration lets you cast oversized threats ahead of curve.
  • Lessons/Value — The cost reduction turns Lesson spells into cheap, repeatable card advantage and removal.
  • Voltron — Pump and trample on Iroh plus Firebending mana for combat tricks closes games fast.
