BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever you play a land from exile or cast a spell from exile, you gain 2 life.

Draw Arcanum — {T}: Look at the top card of your library. You may exile it face down.

Play Arcanum — {T}: Until end of turn, you may play cards exiled with Urianger Augurelt. Spells you cast this way cost {2} less to cast.

Guide

Gameplan

Urianger is a slow-rolling card advantage and value engine: tap to bank the top of your library face-down each turn, then tap again to unleash those cards with a {2} discount while gaining incremental life. You build a board of cheap creatures and untappers, protect Urianger, and grind the table out of resources before closing with a payoff finisher. Treat it as a midrange UW value deck that snowballs as your exile stockpile and cost reductions compound.

Strengths

  • Generates persistent card advantage without spending cards from hand
  • Built-in cost reduction makes expensive bombs cheap to deploy
  • Steady lifegain buffers against aggro while you set up
  • UW gives access to premium removal, counters, and board wipes
  • Low mana value (2) means cheap recasts after removal

Weaknesses

  • Both abilities require tapping a fragile 2-mana body, so it's slow and removal-prone
  • Only banks one card per turn cycle without untap support — engine is grindy
  • No inherent way to close games; needs a dedicated finisher
  • Vulnerable to graveyard/exile hate and stax that taps down
  • Two-step process (Draw then Play) is mana- and time-intensive

Key Cards

  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Lets Urianger draw and play Arcanum the same turn and dodges summoning sickness.
  • Intruder Alarm — Untaps Urianger every time a creature enters, enabling repeated activations.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste protect a fragile, must-tap commander that the table wants dead.
  • Teferi's Ageless Insight — Doubles the card flow when paired with the exile-and-replay loop and other draw.
  • Approach of the Second Sun — A clean wincon you can stockpile and cheaply recast from exile with the discount.
  • Aether Channeler — Flexible value creature that synergizes with untap-on-ETB and the blink shell.

Upgrade Path

Add untap enablers (Thousand-Year Elixir, Magewright's Stone, Intruder Alarm) and blink creatures so you can fire both abilities every turn and loop ETBs. Prioritize cheap protection (Swiftfoot Boots, Heroic Intervention) and efficient UW interaction (Swords to Plowshares, Cyclonic Rift, Supreme Verdict) to survive the slow setup. Finish the curve with a decisive payoff like Approach of the Second Sun or a discounted top-end bomb so the value engine actually closes games.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Approach of the Second Sun cast twice with the cost discount
  • ▸Grinding the table out of cards and resolving an overwhelming bomb
  • ▸Voltron/beatdown with discounted threats backed by protection
  • ▸Combo finishes off repeated untaps (e.g., big payoffs flooded into play)

Archetypes

  • Value Midrange — Urianger steadily banks and discounts cards, out-resourcing opponents over a long game.
  • Blink/ETB — Untap effects tied to creatures entering let you loop Draw and Play Arcanum repeatedly.
  • Control — UW counters and wipes stall the board while the exile engine pulls ahead on cards.
  • Spellslinger/Big-Spell Ramp — The {2} discount makes casting expensive sorceries and bombs from exile efficient.
