BuildCard details

The Commander

When Urza enters, create a 0/0 colorless Construct artifact creature token with "This token gets +1/+1 for each artifact you control."

Tap an untapped artifact you control: Add {U}.

{5}: Shuffle your library, then exile the top card. Until end of turn, you may play that card without paying its mana cost.

Guide

Gameplan

Urza flood the board with artifacts, tap them for blue mana, and convert that mana into either a giant Construct beater or chained free spells off the {5} ability. You ramp explosively early, then dump your hand and combo or win with overwhelming card advantage and artifact synergies.

Strengths

  • Generates absurd mana by tapping every artifact, including mana rocks for double value with Urza's ability
  • Comes with an immediate scaling threat in the Construct token
  • The {5} impulse-draw ability is a repeatable, mana-fueled card advantage and combo engine
  • Mono-blue gives access to the deepest counterspell and interaction suite in the format
  • Enables some of the most compact and resilient combos in cEDH

Weaknesses

  • Heavily reliant on its artifacts — a single board wipe or Vandalblast cripples both mana and the Construct
  • Mono-blue lacks efficient artifact recursion and creature removal
  • High deck cost and skill ceiling; mana base of rocks is fragile to artifact hate
  • Removing Urza shuts off the mana engine and free-spell ability
  • Can be a glass cannon if the combo is disrupted

Key Cards

  • Winter Orb — Urza taps artifacts for mana, so symmetric land-tax stax pieces hurt opponents far more than you.
  • Mystic Forge — Combined with Urza's mana and zero-cost rocks, it draws your entire artifact-heavy deck.
  • Sensei's Divining Top — A free rock that taps for mana, smooths draws, and pairs with Mystic Forge/Future Sight for infinite card flow.
  • Thopter Foundry — Forms the Thopter-Sword combo, generating infinite tokens, life, and Construct power.
  • Sword of the Meek — Loops with Thopter Foundry and Krark-Clan Ironworks for an infinite, game-ending combo.
  • Krark-Clan Ironworks — Sacrifices artifacts for mana to enable storm-style combos and fuel Urza's free spells.
  • Tezzeret the Seeker — Tutors any artifact and can ultimate to turn your rocks into lethal creatures.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Mox Opal, Chrome Mox) so Urza lands early and immediately generates explosive mana. Tighten the combo package—Thopter Foundry/Sword of the Meek/KCI, Isochron Scepter/Dramatic Reversal, and Mystic Forge/Sensei's Top—and back it with premium counterspells (Force of Will, Mana Drain, Fierce Guardianship) and tutors like Tezzeret the Seeker and Whir of Invention to find your pieces consistently.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Thopter Foundry + Sword of the Meek + a sacrifice outlet (Krark-Clan Ironworks) for infinite tokens/life
  • ▸Storm or repeated free spells via the {5} ability into a finisher like Aetherflux Reservoir or a mana sink
  • ▸A massive Construct token swinging for lethal once you control many artifacts
  • ▸Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal for infinite mana into any X-spell or activated ability

Archetypes

  • Combo — Urza's mana and free-spell ability assemble Thopter-Sword, Isochron Scepter loops, and storm finishes quickly.
  • Artifacts — Every artifact taps for mana and pumps the Construct, rewarding a critical mass of rocks and synergy pieces.
  • Stax — Symmetric resource denial like Winter Orb and Static Orb barely affects Urza since he taps artifacts, not lands.
  • Control — Mono-blue counterspells plus huge mana let Urza protect a combo or grind opponents out.
