BuildCard details

The Commander

Vigilance

{1}, {T}: Draw a card, then discard a card.

Whenever you discard one or more artifact cards, create a tapped Powerstone token. This ability triggers only once each turn. (The token is an artifact with "{T}: Add {C}. This mana can't be spent to cast a nonartifact spell.")

Guide

Gameplan

Use Urza's loot ability each turn to dig and pitch artifacts, generating Powerstone tokens that ramp into big artifacts and colorless mana. Build a mono-blue artifact engine that snowballs into either a powerful payoff (big creatures, draw engines) or an artifact-based combo, then close with overwhelming card advantage and ramp.

Strengths

  • Built-in card filtering and selection every turn smooths draws and finds answers
  • Powerstone tokens provide fast colorless ramp for big artifacts and activated abilities
  • Mono-blue gives access to the format's best counterspells and interaction
  • Synergizes with discard-matters and reanimation since you want artifacts in the graveyard

Weaknesses

  • Powerstone mana can't cast nonartifact spells, limiting its flexibility
  • Mono-blue means weak removal and no enchantment/most artifact removal
  • Urza must be on board and untapped to loot, making him a removal target
  • Slow to set up; can fall behind aggressive or combo decks without early interaction
  • No inherent win condition—needs dedicated payoffs

Key Cards

  • Mind Stone — Cheap mana rock you can pitch to Urza for a Powerstone or cash in for a card late.
  • Foundry Inspector — Cost reduction stacks with Powerstone ramp to deploy multiple artifacts per turn.
  • Thopter Spy Network — Turns your artifact density into a recurring token and card-draw engine.
  • Karn, the Great Creator — Stops opposing artifact abilities and tutors any artifact from outside the game.
  • Sai, Master Thopterist — Generates flyers and card advantage whenever you cast artifacts.
  • Unwinding Clock — Untaps Powerstones and artifacts on each turn, doubling your colorless output.
  • Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer — Can copy a token to turn your Powerstones into an army (in the 99 of similar shells, but here as inspiration—note color).

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana rocks (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault) and cost reducers to accelerate Powerstone synergy, then layer in a compact combo finish like Time Sieve plus token engines or infinite-mana into an artifact outlet. Improve interaction with premium counterspells (Mana Drain, Fierce Guardianship, Force of Negation) and tutors like Transmute Artifact and Whir of Invention to find your payoffs consistently. Finally, include artifact recursion (Goblin Welder analogs, Academy Ruins) to make discarding artifacts to Urza pure upside.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Assemble an artifact combo (e.g., Time Sieve with token generators, or infinite colorless mana into an outlet)
  • ▸Overwhelm with thopter/construct tokens from payoffs like Thopter Spy Network and Sai
  • ▸Ramp into a massive game-ending artifact such as a haste-enabled Blightsteel Colossus or eldrazi
  • ▸Grind out card advantage until you out-resource and counter every threat

Archetypes

  • Artifacts / Big Mana — Powerstones plus mana rocks let you cast and activate enormous colorless artifacts ahead of curve.
  • Control — Mono-blue gives counterspells and card filtering to durdle into a dominant late game.
  • Combo — Reliable ramp and looting assemble artifact loops like Time Sieve or infinite-mana engines.
  • Reanimator — Discarding artifacts to Urza feeds graveyard recursion like Goblin Welder-style effects (colorless reanimation artifacts).
