BuildCard details

The Commander

When Vanille enters, mill two cards, then return a permanent card from your graveyard to your hand.

At the beginning of your first main phase, if you both own and control Vanille and a creature named Fang, Fearless l'Cie, you may pay {3}{B}{G}. If you do, exile them, then meld them into Ragnarok, Divine Deliverance.

Guide

Gameplan

Vanille is a value engine that mills you for resources and returns a permanent (land, creature, or artifact) on every cast, fueling a graveyard-centric BG strategy. You grind incremental advantage through self-mill and recursion, then either go wide/tall with reanimated threats or pursue the meld with Fang into Ragnarok, Divine Deliverance for a powerful payoff. Turn to turn you fill your yard, recur your best permanents, and out-value the table.

Strengths

  • Repeatable permanent recursion makes Vanille resilient and card-advantageous every recast
  • Self-mill enables reanimator and graveyard payoffs without extra setup
  • Cheap four-mana body in flexible BG colors with strong removal and ramp
  • Meld with Fang gives a built-in finisher and incentive for a focused two-card package

Weaknesses

  • Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) cripples the core engine
  • Meld requires owning and controlling both pieces, making it fragile and removal-vulnerable
  • No evasion or protection baked in; Vanille dies easily to spot removal
  • Mill can deck yourself out in very long games if unmanaged
  • Lacks raw speed against dedicated combo decks

Key Cards

  • Fang, Fearless l'Cie — The meld partner that transforms into Ragnarok, Divine Deliverance for a game-ending payoff.
  • Eternal Witness — Doubles down on Vanille's recursion theme, repeatedly returning key permanents and spells.
  • Meren of Clan Nel Toth — Provides recurring reanimation that synergizes perfectly with the self-mill plan.
  • Animate Dead — Cheap reanimation to cheat fatties out of the graveyard Vanille fills.
  • Altar of Dementia — Sac outlet plus mill engine that turns recurred creatures into card flow and graveyard fuel.
  • Stitcher's Supplier — Cheap, repeatable self-mill that loads the yard for recursion and reanimation.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Birds of Paradise) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble engines or the Fang package faster. Lean into a tight reanimator/aristocrats combo line with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed plus a free sac outlet, or loop creatures with Phyrexian Altar. Include graveyard insurance and protection like Heroic Intervention to defend Vanille and the meld.
