The Commander

Lifelink, toxic 1

Whenever you proliferate, choose one —

• If you don't control a creature named The Hollow Sentinel, create The Hollow Sentinel, a legendary 3/3 colorless Phyrexian Golem artifact creature token.

• Target artifact creature you control gains flying and lifelink until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Venser, Corpse Puppet is a proliferate-matters commander that snowballs counters, generates a recurring 3/3 Golem (The Hollow Sentinel), and turns artifact creatures into evasive lifelinking threats. Early turns deploy proliferate engines and counter-payoffs, then each proliferate trigger builds your board and gains life. You close games by proliferating poison/toxic counters or by going wide with flying lifelinkers.

Strengths

  • Cheap 2-mana commander with built-in toxic and lifelink, advancing a poison clock from the command zone
  • Proliferate provides huge flexibility: +1/+1, charge, loyalty, infect/poison, and energy counters all scale at once
  • Free, recurring 3/3 token (The Hollow Sentinel) gives an artifact body to attach evasion to
  • Naturally synergizes with planeswalkers, Sagas, and counter-based combos in Dimir colors

Weaknesses

  • Low base power means it relies on enablers; an empty board makes the second ability dead
  • Dimir lacks efficient board wipes recovery and big mana, so it can stall against go-wide
  • Proliferate triggers are reactive—needs counters already on the battlefield to matter
  • Vulnerable to artifact removal hitting your Golem token engine

Key Cards

  • Inexorable Tide — Turns every spell you cast into a proliferate trigger, fueling Venser's Golems and the poison plan.
  • Atraxa, Praetors' Voice — Free proliferate every end step stacks counters and triggers Venser repeatedly (note: only in color identity if commander, but as 99 she's off-color—use other engines).
  • Karn's Bastion — A land that proliferates on demand, reliably triggering Venser without spending cards.
  • Evolution Sage — Proliferates every landfall, generating multiple Venser triggers per turn.
  • Tezzeret's Gambit — Cantrips while proliferating, advancing both your hand and your counter engine.
  • Grafted Exoskeleton — Turns any toxic/Golem attacker into an infect threat, accelerating poison kills via proliferate.

Upgrade Path

Lean into a focused proliferate package—Inexorable Tide, Evolution Sage, Karn's Bastion, Flux Channeler—so every turn multiplies your engine. Add a concise infect/toxic kill (Grafted Exoskeleton, Skithiryx-style threats) or a planeswalker suite to convert proliferate into closing power, and tighten the manabase with fast lands and Dimir staples like Cyclonic Rift and Counterspell for protection. Cut clunky standalone artifacts in favor of cheap proliferate enablers and interaction to lower your curve and raise consistency.
