BuildCard details

The Commander

Verazol enters with a +1/+1 counter on it for each mana spent to cast it.

Whenever you cast a kicked spell, you may remove two +1/+1 counters from Verazol. If you do, copy that spell. You may choose new targets for the copy. (A copy of a permanent spell becomes a token.)

Guide

Gameplan

Verazol is a kicker-payoff commander: cast spells with kicker, then remove two +1/+1 counters from Verazol to copy them, doubling the value of every kicked spell. You ramp Verazol out big, then chain kicked spells to generate overwhelming card advantage, removal, or token armies, replenishing counters with proliferate and more big spells.

Strengths

  • Doubles the value of kicked spells for free, turning solid cards into game-warping plays
  • Verazol enters huge when ramped into, providing many counters to spend
  • Proliferate engines refuel counters indefinitely for repeated copies
  • Simu/GU has deep access to kicker cards plus ramp and card draw

Weaknesses

  • Relies on Verazol staying alive; spot removal stops the engine cold
  • Many of the strongest kicker spells are slow or color-restricted (lots of WBR kicker live outside the identity)
  • Copies still need counters, so heavy removal or proliferate disruption stalls you
  • No inherent protection or evasion on the commander itself

Key Cards

  • Rishkar's Expertise — Massive draw off big Verazol, and kicked-spell synergy fuels the engine.
  • Inscription of Abundance — A flexible modal kicker spell that copies into three powerful effects at once.
  • Bond of Flourishing — Cheap kickable card selection that's even better doubled.
  • Verdant Sun's Avatar — Kicked copy creates two bodies and doubles the lifegain triggers.
  • Doubling Season — Verazol enters with twice the counters, giving far more copy fuel.
  • Inexorable Tide — Proliferate on every spell cast continually refills Verazol's counters.

Upgrade Path

Add more proliferate and counter doublers (Doubling Season, Hardened Scales, Inexorable Tide) to keep Verazol copying every turn, and prioritize high-impact kicker spells that scale when copied. Improve ramp (Sol Ring, Simic signets, mana dorks) to deploy a large Verazol early, and add commander protection like Lightning Greaves and Heroic Intervention to keep the engine online.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overwhelming board state from doubled token and creature spells
  • ▸Copied X-spells or big finishers like Verdant Sun's Avatar snowballing life and bodies
  • ▸Card-advantage avalanche from doubled draw spells converting into lethal threats

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger Value — Copying kicked instants and sorceries doubles draw, ramp, and removal each turn.
  • +1/+1 Counters / Proliferate — Verazol's counter pool synergizes with proliferate engines to keep copying.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Copying kicked creature and token spells builds a doubled board fast.
  • Ramp Midrange — Big mana casts a giant Verazol and powers expensive kicker payoffs.
