BuildCard details

The Commander

At the beginning of your upkeep, if there are four or more creature cards in your graveyard, return a creature card at random from your graveyard to your hand.

Choose a Background (You can have a Background as a second commander.)

Guide

Gameplan

Fill your graveyard with creatures, then grind out the game by recurring a random creature to hand each upkeep once you hit four creatures in the yard. You pair Viconia with a Background to define your win path, dumping bodies into the bin via self-mill, sacrifice, and discard, then reusing them for value, aristocrats drain, or recursive combos.

Strengths

  • Free, repeatable creature recursion that's hard to interact with
  • Mono-black gives access to the format's best tutors and reanimation
  • Background slot lets you tune the deck toward aristocrats, voltron, or value
  • Cheap 3-mana commander that comes down early and works with cheap sacrifice loops
  • Naturally resilient to creature removal since bodies come back

Weaknesses

  • Recursion is random, so you can't reliably retrieve a specific key creature
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantment and artifact removal
  • Needs four creatures in yard to turn on, so the engine is slow early
  • Graveyard hate (Bojuka Bog, Rest in Peace) shuts the whole plan down
  • Card advantage from the trigger is only once per turn and not guaranteed value

Key Cards

  • Gravecrawler — Recurs itself endlessly for sacrifice loops and helps keep the yard stocked.
  • Viscera Seer — Free sac outlet to feed the graveyard and enable aristocrats engines.
  • Blood Artist — Turns recurred and sacrificed creatures into incremental life drain to close games.
  • Buried Alive — Instantly loads your graveyard with three creatures to switch Viconia on next upkeep.
  • Reanimate — Cheap reanimation to put a big creature from the stocked yard directly into play.
  • Bolas's Citadel — Mono-black card-advantage engine that synergizes with a life-gaining aristocrats shell.

Upgrade Path

Add fast self-mill and reanimation (Entomb, Animate Dead, Victimize) plus efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble loops quickly. Pick an enabling Background—Reckless Bravado or a sacrifice-friendly one—and tighten the curve with cheap sac outlets like Carrion Feeder. Push into a compact combo finish (Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + Blood Artist) so the recursion engine converts directly into a win rather than just grinding value.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and Bastion of Remembrance
  • ▸Sacrifice loops (Gravecrawler + sac outlet + drain payoff) for infinite damage
  • ▸Reanimated beaters smashing in for combat damage
  • ▸Background-defined plan such as a voltron commander dealing lethal swings

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Recurring creatures plus sac outlets and drain payoffs creates an inevitable value engine.
  • Reanimator — You self-mill fatties then cheat them in, with Viconia recurring the leftovers.
  • Sacrifice Combo — Gravecrawler-style loops with a free sac outlet and a Blood Artist effect can win outright.
  • Value Midrange — Steady recursion grinds opponents out of resources in long games.
