The Commander

Deal with the Black Guardian — When Vislor Turlough enters, you may have an opponent gain control of it. If you do, it's goaded for as long as they control it.

At the beginning of your end step, draw a card, then you lose life equal to the number of cards in your hand.

Doctor's companion (You can have two commanders if the other is the Doctor.)

Guide

Gameplan

Vislor Turlough is a mono-black engine that draws you a card every end step, but punishes you for hoarding by costing life equal to your hand size — so the deck is built to empty its hand fast and convert that card advantage into pressure. You curve out aggressively, dump your hand each turn, and turn life loss into a resource with payoffs and lifegain stabilizers. Pair him with a Doctor companion to splash a second color and bolt on a second strategy. Close games by going wide, draining the table, or beating down while drawing through your deck.

Strengths

  • Free, repeatable card draw every turn with no mana investment.
  • Mono-black gives access to tutors, recursion, and unconditional removal to refine the engine.
  • The goad clause can be weaponized in pillow-fort or politics builds by gifting it to an opponent.
  • Doctor's companion adds a second commander and a second color of support.

Weaknesses

  • The end-step life loss snowballs brutally if you can't keep your hand small.
  • No built-in evasion, protection, or board impact on its own — it's a fragile 4-drop engine.
  • Life payment makes you vulnerable to aggro and burn before you stabilize.
  • Wants a tight, low curve, so it can struggle to deploy high-impact bombs.

Key Cards

  • Bolas's Citadel — Plays off the top of your library so cards never sit in hand, dodging Turlough's life tax while spending the life you'd lose anyway.
  • Necropotence — Converts life into a hand you must then dump, but pairs with discard/hellbent payoffs and aggressive deployment.
  • Liliana of the Veil — A recurring discard outlet that helps you shrink your hand before the end step.
  • K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth — Lets you pay life for black mana, turning Turlough's life-as-resource theme into explosive turns.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Gains life to offset the end-step loss and converts it into a one-shot kill.
  • Theater of Horrors — Exiles cards to play later so they don't count toward your hand size while still extending your reach.

Upgrade Path

Lower your curve and add cheavy card-conversion like Bolas's Citadel, Theater of Horrors, and discard/madness payoffs so you spend cards as fast as you draw them. Add lifegain anchors (Aetherflux Reservoir, Vito, Sanguine Bond) and fast mana (Dark Ritual, Sol Ring, K'rrik) to stay ahead of the life tax. Pick an aggressive Doctor companion to add a proactive second color and a clearer win condition, and round out with black's premium tutors to assemble your engine reliably.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Symmetrical table drain with Aetherflux Reservoir, Exsanguinate, or aristocrats payoffs.
  • ▸Wide creature beatdown fueled by relentless card advantage.
  • ▸Comboing off with Bolas's Citadel plus a life-gain or cost-reducer engine.
  • ▸Grinding opponents out with superior card flow and recursion.

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Life loss is your core theme, so sacrifice and drain payoffs turn the downside into a win condition.
  • Mono-Black Midrange — Tutors, removal, and recursion let you build a lean, hand-emptying value engine around the draw trigger.
  • Hellbent/Discard — Keeping your hand near empty minimizes life loss and unlocks hellbent and madness payoffs.
  • Politics — The goad clause lets you hand the commander to an opponent to redirect aggression in slower pods.
