BuildCard details

The Commander

Menace

Whenever another creature dies during your turn, put a +1/+1 counter on Vogar.

When Vogar dies, draw a card for each +1/+1 counter on it.

Guide

Gameplan

Vogar is a mono-black aristocrats/sacrifice payoff that snowballs into a hard-to-block beater while turning every death on your turn into card advantage when it eventually dies. You flood the board with creatures and tokens, set up repeatable sacrifice loops, and ping the table with drain effects while Vogar grows huge. Win by connecting with a massive menace threat or by draining life through aristocrats engines, refueling off Vogar's death trigger when needed.

Strengths

  • Counters accumulate fast with token swarms and sac outlets, making Vogar a quick, evasive clock via menace
  • Built-in insurance: Vogar's death draws a fistful of cards, so trading or sacrificing it is rarely a real loss
  • Mono-black gives access to the deepest pool of tutors, ramp, and recursion
  • Naturally rewards the aristocrats plan many black decks already want to play

Weaknesses

  • Trigger only fires on YOUR turn, so deaths during opponents' turns or via exile do nothing
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantment and artifact removal
  • Relies on having creatures to sacrifice; a clean board wipe stalls the engine
  • Voltron-on-Vogar is vulnerable to exile-based removal that denies the draw payoff

Key Cards

  • Viscera Seer — Free repeatable sac outlet that triggers Vogar's counters and scrys you toward gas.
  • Blood Artist — Turns each death into incremental drain, making your sacrifice loops a wincon.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Generates treasure off every death, fueling explosive sacrifice turns and big counter spikes.
  • Phyrexian Altar — Free sac outlet that ramps mana while loading Vogar with counters.
  • Bastion of Remembrance — Enchantment-based Blood Artist effect that's hard for mono-black opponents to remove.
  • Gravecrawler — Recurs endlessly to feed sac outlets, padding Vogar's counters and aristocrat drains.
  • Whisper, Blood Liturgist — Reanimation engine that pairs with the constant stream of dying creatures.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble engines faster, then build toward a deterministic combo finish such as Gravecrawler + free sac altar + a death-drain payoff. Improve recovery with Living Death and Bolas's Citadel, and protect Vogar with Swiftfoot Boots; trim slow value pieces for cheaper, more synergistic sac fodder and the best mono-black interaction like Toxic Deluge and Damnation.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connecting with an oversized menace Vogar, optionally with trample or extra combat
  • ▸Draining the table via Blood Artist-style effects during sacrifice loops
  • ▸Combo kills like Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + Blood Artist for infinite drain
  • ▸Grinding out card advantage off Vogar's death trigger and out-resourcing opponents

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Vogar directly rewards creatures dying on your turn and refuels you when it dies.
  • Sacrifice/Tokens — Token generators provide endless fodder to grow Vogar and trigger drain effects.
  • Reanimator — Mono-black recursion loops feed sac outlets and rebuild after wipes.
  • Voltron — Menace plus rapidly stacking +1/+1 counters can make Vogar a fast evasive kill.
