BuildCard details

The Commander

When Wernog, Rider's Chaplain enters or leaves the battlefield, each opponent may investigate. Each opponent who doesn't loses 1 life. You investigate X times, where X is one plus the number of opponents who investigated this way.

Partner—Friends forever (You can have two commanders if both have this ability.)

Guide

Gameplan

Abuse Wernog's enter/leave trigger to flood your board with Clue tokens, then convert that artifact mass and card draw into value engines, aristocrats payoffs, or token swarms. You blink or recur Wernog repeatedly to generate a clue every loop while opponents either chip away their own life or hand you even more clues. Win by grinding the table out of resources, sacrificing artifacts/tokens for damage, or going wide.

Strengths

  • Strong, repeatable card advantage engine via Clue tokens in colors that otherwise struggle to draw
  • Cheap two-mana body that loves to be blinked, sacrificed, and recast
  • Pings every opponent for life loss when they decline, pressuring the table over time
  • Partner—Friends forever opens flexible color/strategy pairings and a backup commander
  • Fuels artifact-matters, sacrifice, and 'draw a card' synergies effortlessly

Weaknesses

  • Clues require extra mana to crack, so the engine is mana-hungry
  • No protection or evasion—dies easily and the trigger is the only real value
  • Opponents control whether they investigate, limiting the life-loss plan
  • Slow on its own; needs build-around payoffs to actually close games
  • Vulnerable to artifact wipes that strand uncracked Clues

Key Cards

  • Academy Manufactor — Triples every Clue trigger into Clues, Treasures, and Food, exploding your engine.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifices Wernog and tokens for mana to fuel blink loops and Clue cracking.
  • Conjurer's Closet — Blinks Wernog every end step for a guaranteed Clue volley each turn.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles all the Clue tokens Wernog and friends generate.
  • Reckoner Bankbuster — Pairs token/artifact themes and reinforces a low-curve value plan.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Turns sacrificed tokens into Treasure, paying for endless Clue cracking and recursion.
  • Krark-Clan Ironworks — Converts your sea of artifact tokens into massive mana for explosive turns.

Upgrade Path

Add blink and reanimation enablers (Conjurer's Closet, Ghostly Flicker effects, Reanimate) plus free sacrifice outlets like Ashnod's Altar and Phyrexian Altar to loop the trigger cheaply. Layer in token/artifact doublers (Academy Manufactor, Anointed Procession) and Treasure-makers to pay for cracking Clues, then pick a hard payoff—Marionette Master, Mayhem Devil, or a wide overrun—to actually win rather than just draw cards. Pair with a Friends forever partner that gives reach or protection to cover Wernog's fragility.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Out-grinding the table with overwhelming Clue card advantage and artifact synergies
  • ▸Aristocrats drain loops sacrificing Wernog and tokens repeatedly
  • ▸Going wide with tokens enhanced by doublers and overrun effects
  • ▸Incremental life loss from opponents declining to investigate over many turns

Archetypes

  • Artifact Tokens / Clues — Wernog manufactures piles of Clues that feed artifact-matters and token doublers.
  • Blink — Flickering Wernog repeatedly retriggers his clue-and-drain ability each turn.
  • Aristocrats — Cheap recurring body plus token fodder enables sacrifice and drain loops.
  • Group Slug / Control — The 'lose 1 life' clause and grindy card advantage support an attrition control plan.
