The Commander

Look to the Stars — At the beginning of your upkeep, put a time counter on Wilfred Mott. Then look at the top X cards of your library, where X is the number of time counters on Wilfred Mott. You may put a nonland permanent card with mana value 3 or less from among them onto the battlefield. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Guide

Gameplan

Wilfred Mott is a free-value engine: each upkeep you add a time counter and dig progressively deeper to drop a free MV-3-or-less nonland permanent onto the battlefield. Early turns play out a low-curve permanents.dec deck and protect Wilfred so the counters snowball; by mid-game you're cheating out two-to-three relevant permanents' worth of value per turn. You win by accumulating an overwhelming board of cheap value pieces, tokens, and engines while the counters make every upkeep find something useful.

Strengths

  • Recurring free card advantage in mono-white, a color starved for it.
  • Snowballs hard—each turn digs deeper, so a protected Wilfred quickly outvalues the table.
  • Lets you run cheap, high-impact permanents you'd otherwise have to hardcast, freeing mana for other plays.
  • Filters your draws by bottoming dead cards, smoothing your topdecks.

Weaknesses

  • Slow and grindy—if Wilfred is killed you lose the engine and the time counters reset on recast.
  • Caps at MV 3 or less, so it never cheats out your bombs.
  • Mono-white still struggles with raw card draw and ramp if the engine is disrupted.
  • Hits are random within the looked-at pile (you can only grab one), so explosive turns aren't guaranteed early.
  • Vulnerable to graveyard/exile removal and board wipes that undo accumulated value.

Key Cards

  • Esper Sentinel — A premier MV-1 hit that generates card advantage every time it lands off Wilfred.
  • Smothering Tithe — Wilfred can cheat this game-warping ramp engine onto the battlefield for free.
  • Skullclamp — Pairs with cheap creatures you flood the board with to convert them into a card-draw engine.
  • Swords to Plowshares — You still need premium removal to protect Wilfred and answer threats while the engine builds.
  • Mother of Runes — A repeatable protection piece that keeps Wilfred and your key permanents alive.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles the tokens generated by the many cheap token-makers Wilfred can deploy.

Upgrade Path

Lean into the lowest, most impactful MV-3-or-less permanents (Esper Sentinel, Smothering Tithe, Mother of Runes, Thalia variants) so every upkeep hit matters, and load up on cheap protection like Swiftfoot Boots and Teferi's Protection to keep Wilfred alive. Add token doublers and a payoff (Skullclamp, Anointed Procession, Cathars' Crusade) to convert the wide board into a real win. Top-end the mana base with fast rocks like Sol Ring and Mana Crypt plus tutors such as Enlightened Tutor to find your best engines and protection on schedule.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Going wide with tokens and finishing via anthem effects or an overrun-style payoff.
  • ▸Grinding the table into card-advantage oblivion, then closing with efficient creatures.
  • ▸Assembling a cheap combo or lock with repeatedly cheated permanents.
  • ▸Voltron-adjacent beatdown backed by protection while the engine outvalues everyone.

Archetypes

  • Value Midrange — Wilfred's upkeep trigger reliably converts a deck of cheap permanents into incremental card advantage every turn.
  • Tokens — Most strong MV-3-or-less hits are token-generators and anthems, letting Wilfred build a wide board for free.
  • Stax — He can repeatedly drop cheap taxing permanents like Thalia and Aven Mindcensor to grind opponents out.
  • Blink/Enchantress-lite — Cheap ETB creatures and enchantment engines maximize free value off each Look to the Stars trigger.
