The Commander

Flying

Whenever you attack with one or more Wraiths, exile the top X cards of your library, where X is their total power. You may play those cards this turn.

Undying (When this creature dies, if it had no +1/+1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under its owner's control with a +1/+1 counter on it.)

Guide

Gameplan

Witch-king is an evasive Wraith tribal beatdown commander that converts attacking power into card advantage. Build a critical mass of Wraiths and aggressive creatures, swing wide, then exile and play a flood of cards each combat to refuel and snowball. Undying makes the commander a resilient, recursive threat that's hard to remove permanently.

Strengths

  • Generates massive card advantage tied to attacking, fueling explosive turns
  • Undying makes the commander nearly impossible to deal with through normal removal
  • Flying gives reliable evasion to connect for the trigger
  • Rakdos has top-tier removal and aggressive payoffs to clear blockers

Weaknesses

  • Impulse-draw cards must be played the same turn, so unused mana is wasted
  • Wraith tribe is shallow, forcing reliance on changelings and token makers
  • Vulnerable to board wipes and fliers/reach that block the commander
  • Needs to attack to do anything, exposing it to combat tricks and deathtouch

Key Cards

  • Maskwood Nexus — Turns every creature you control into a Wraith, dramatically widening attack triggers.
  • Realmwalker — As a Wraith changeling, it lets you cast creatures off the top, synergizing with impulse draw.
  • Nazgul — Cheap, repeatable Wraith bodies that stack the tribe and total power for the trigger.
  • Birgi, God of Storytelling — Generates mana when you cast spells, letting you actually use all the cards you impulse-draw.
  • Krenko, Mob Boss — With Maskwood Nexus making tokens Wraiths, he floods the board with attackers and power.

Upgrade Path

Add mana-amplifiers like Birgi and Storm-Kiln Artist so impulse-drawn cards never go to waste, and lean on changelings (Universal Automaton, Chameleon Colossus) plus Maskwood Nexus to deepen the tribe. Improve evasion and anthem support to ensure triggers connect, and include fast Rakdos rituals and treasure generators to push explosive multi-spell turns.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Wide Wraith swarm dealing repeated combat damage with flying and evasion
  • ▸Snowballing impulse-draw into an overwhelming board and burn finish
  • ▸Aristocrat drains via Blood Artist effects with recursive Undying bodies
  • ▸Going over the top with a single huge attack flooding extra spells

Archetypes

  • Tribal Aggro — Wraiths and changelings swarm the board to maximize attack-triggered card advantage.
  • Go-Wide Tokens — Token power totals up the impulse-draw X while pressuring multiple opponents.
  • Aristocrats — Undying and recursive Wraiths fuel sacrifice loops and drain effects.
  • Spellslinger Aggro — Impulse-drawn cards encourage cheap spells and rituals to convert cards into damage.
