The Commander

Protection from Humans

Pay 1 life, Sacrifice another creature: Put a -1/-1 counter on up to one target creature and draw a card.

{B}{B}, Discard a card: Proliferate. (Choose any number of permanents and/or players, then give each another counter of each kind already there.)

Guide

Gameplan

Yawgmoth is a mono-black aristocrats engine: you feed creatures into his sacrifice ability to draw cards, kill opposing creatures with -1/-1 counters, and grind out value while everyone else loses board presence. You build a wide board of expendable token-makers and undying creatures, then loop sacrifices into massive card advantage. Win by attrition and inevitability, then convert the engine into a combo or drain finish.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, mana-free card draw stapled to flexible removal makes him one of the best card-advantage engines in black.
  • Protection from Humans makes him hard to block or kill with the format's most common creatures.
  • Combos extremely easily with undying creatures for infinite loops (draw, kill, drain).
  • Mono-color consistency means easy mana base and access to powerful black tutors and rituals.

Weaknesses

  • Pays life for every activation, so aggressive or burn pressure can be punishing without lifegain.
  • Heavily reliant on the commander; repeated removal/exile forces escalating tax and stalls the engine.
  • Needs creatures to sacrifice—if the board is wiped or you flood out on noncreatures, the engine sputters.
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantments and noncreature permanents (Rest in Peace, graveyard hate) shutting off loops.

Key Cards

  • Geralf's Messenger — With Yawgmoth it loops via undying for infinite drain, killing the whole table.
  • Mikaeus, the Unhallowed — Grants undying to non-Humans, enabling infinite sacrifice loops for draw, removal, and damage.
  • Pawn of Ulamog — Generates a fodder token every time a creature dies, fueling continuous Yawgmoth activations.
  • Blood Artist — Turns each sacrifice into incremental drain that closes games and offsets life payments.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Produces Treasure on every death, paying for proliferate and refueling the engine.
  • Vampiric Tutor — Finds Yawgmoth, a combo piece, or answers exactly when you need them.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and tutors (Sol Ring, Dark Ritual, Demonic Tutor, Imperial Seal) to assemble loops earlier and protect Yawgmoth with Swiftfoot Boots or Lightning Greaves. Lock in a redundant infinite combo (Mikaeus + Walking Ballista or Geralf's Messenger) plus multiple Blood Artist effects so any sac engine ends the game. Include lifegain and recursion like Phyrexian Reclamation and Beseech the Mirror, and round out interaction with cheap black removal and graveyard hate of your own.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Infinite undying loop (e.g., Mikaeus + Geralf's Messenger) draining all opponents.
  • ▸Blood Artist / Zulaport Cutthroat death-trigger drain over repeated sacrifices.
  • ▸Out-card-advantaging the table and grinding to a wide alpha strike.
  • ▸Proliferating -1/-1 counters to wipe opposing creatures and win the resulting board state.

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — His sacrifice-for-value ability is the textbook aristocrats engine paired with death-triggers like Blood Artist.
  • Combo — Undying creatures plus a death payoff create deterministic infinite loops to win on the spot.
  • Tokens — Wide token boards give endless cheap fodder to sacrifice for cards and removal.
  • +1/+1 Counters / Proliferate — His second ability rewards counter synergies, and proliferate stacks -1/-1 counters to sweep boards.
