The Commander

Trample

Whenever Yidris deals combat damage to a player, as you cast spells from your hand this turn, they gain cascade. (When you cast the spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card that costs less. You may cast it without paying its mana cost. Put the exiled cards on the bottom in a random order.)

Guide

Gameplan

Connect with Yidris in combat once, then chain spells out of your hand—each one cascades into free value, snowballing into a turn that either combos off or buries the table in card advantage. Early turns ramp and protect Yidris; once he hits, you dump your hand to cascade into bombs, free spells, and ultimately a game-ending payoff.

Strengths

  • Cascade on every hand-cast spell is explosive raw card advantage and free mana value
  • Access to all four of the format's best colors (Sultai value plus red's spells/ramp)
  • Trample makes him reliably connect even into chump blockers
  • Rewards big mana and storm-style turns, enabling true blowout sequences

Weaknesses

  • Entirely dependent on landing combat damage with a 4-mana creature that telegraphs the threat
  • Cascade is random, so consistency suffers without deck tuning
  • Commander-tax and repeated removal can grind you out of resources
  • Wants you to tap out, leaving you exposed if Yidris is answered mid-turn

Key Cards

  • Maelstrom Wanderer — Doubles down on cascade payoffs and gives haste to push Yidris through unblocked.
  • Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh — As cheap cards, cascading off them whiffs little—but more importantly, low-cost spells keep your cascade chain rolling efficiently.
  • Aggravated Assault — Extra combat steps let Yidris connect repeatedly, re-triggering cascade on a fresh batch of spells.
  • Rishkar's Expertise — Massive card draw to refuel the hand you've been emptying, and it cascades for free value itself.
  • Whir of Invention — Tutors combo pieces while cascading, bridging value into a deterministic kill.
  • Rashmi, Eternities Crafter — Stacks even more free spells on top of Yidris's cascade engine for runaway advantage.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve toward cheap, high-impact spells so cascade rarely whiffs, and add cost-reducers and free spells (Cloud of Faeries, ritual effects) to extend chains. Prioritize ways to guarantee Yidris connects—evasion, haste enablers like Lightning Greaves, and extra-combat effects—then add a compact combo (Aggravated Assault loop or a storm payoff) so your cascade turns convert into actual wins rather than just card advantage.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Cascade into and chain enough free spells to deploy a combo (e.g., infinite combat with Aggravated Assault + ritual mana)
  • ▸Aetherflux Reservoir or storm payoff fueled by a long cascade chain
  • ▸Overwhelming board advantage from free creatures and value, then beating down with trample

Archetypes

  • Cascade Value/Goodstuff — Yidris turns every spell into two-for-one+, making a pile of high-impact four-color cards self-sustaining.
  • Storm/Combo — Chaining cheap spells with cascade fuels storm counts and free mana to combo off in one big turn.
  • Spellslinger — Free spell copies and cascades reward an instant/sorcery-heavy build with payoffs like Aetherflux Reservoir.
  • Big Mana Ramp — Ramp into expensive bombs, then cascade off them for compounding value once Yidris swings.
