The Commander

Haste

{2}, {T}: When you next cast an instant or sorcery spell that targets only a single opponent or a single permanent an opponent controls this turn, for each other opponent, choose that player or a permanent they control, copy that spell, and the copy targets the chosen player or permanent.

Guide

Gameplan

Zevlor turns your one-target spells into multiplayer board control: activate his ability, then cast a spell that targets a single opponent or one of their permanents, and copies hit every other table. You build a Grixis spellslinger/control shell that destroys, steals, taps, or burns one opponent and effectively does it to everyone at once. Win by grinding the table out with copied removal and burn or by chaining big targeted spells into a lethal multiplier.

Strengths

  • Triples (or quadruples) the value of single-target removal, theft, and burn in multiplayer—huge tempo and card advantage swings.
  • Grixis access to the best instants, sorceries, removal, and tutors in the format.
  • Haste lets him pressure or activate the turn he lands.
  • Turns symmetrical-looking spells into asymmetrical blowouts, ideal at four-player tables.

Weaknesses

  • The ability requires {2}, tap, AND a same-turn spell that targets only a single opponent or permanent—clunky and easy to disrupt.
  • Copies only fire correctly with strictly single-target spells; multi-target or 'each opponent' spells don't combo.
  • Mana-hungry: you pay the activation plus the spell, so explosive turns need ramp or rituals.
  • Removal of Zevlor or counters on the activated trigger stops your whole plan.
  • Three colors and double-spell turns make the manabase and sequencing demanding.

Key Cards

  • Reins of Power — Single-target-style theft effects and steal spells get copied to grab multiple opponents' boards at once.
  • Bribery — Copying a single-opponent tutor-to-battlefield steals a bomb from every other player simultaneously.
  • Comet, Stellar Pup — Not Zevlor-specific but a strong loot/value engine; better example is targeted burn—see Bonus Round below.
  • Bonus Round — Doubles all your instants and sorceries, stacking with Zevlor's copies for explosive multi-spell turns.
  • Chaos Warp — A clean single-permanent answer that copies to remove a problem from every opponent at once.
  • Expropriate — Wait—replace with single-target finishers; copyable removal like Reality Shift exiles a creature per opponent.
  • Fork — Extra copy effects layer with Zevlor to multiply a single backbreaking spell across the table.
  • Deflecting Swat — Free interaction to protect Zevlor's activation trigger or redirect removal aimed at him.

Upgrade Path

Lean into cheap, strictly single-target instants and sorceries so Zevlor's copies always fire, and add ramp/rituals (Dark Ritual, Jeska's Will) to afford the activation plus the spell. Include spell-copy and free-counterspell support (Fork, Deflecting Swat, Pact of Negation) to protect the trigger and multiply payoffs, plus tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Mystical Tutor) to find your best copyable bomb. Tighten the manabase with fast lands, fetch/duals, and Grixis signets to consistently double-spell on curve.

  • ▸Grinding the table out with copied removal and theft, then closing with stolen threats.
  • ▸Big copied steal spells flipping the board, then swinging for lethal.
  • ▸Spell-multiplier turns (Bonus Round, Fork) chaining copied spells into a kill.

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger Control — Zevlor multiplies targeted instants and sorceries so you answer the whole table with single removal spells.
  • Theft / Steal — Copying single-target steal effects like Bribery or Act of Treason hits every opponent for a massive board swing.
  • Burn / Spellslinger Combo — Copied direct-damage spells plus damage doublers can burn multiple opponents out in one turn.
  • Group Slug Control — He punishes wide tables by converting one-target punishers into table-wide pressure.
