The Commander

Landfall — Whenever a land you control enters, manifest dread if this is the first time this ability has resolved this turn. Otherwise, you may turn a permanent you control face up. (To manifest dread, look at the top two cards of your library. Put one onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature and the other into your graveyard. Turn it face up any time for its mana cost if it's a creature card.)

Guide

Gameplan

Play extra lands every turn to trigger landfall: the first land manifests dread (a 2/2 face-down creature plus a graveyard dig), and subsequent lands flip permanents face up. You build a board of manifested creatures and cheat big spells/creatures onto the battlefield face-down, then flip them up for value or as combat threats while ramping into overwhelming mana.

Strengths

  • Repeatable card advantage and selection through manifest dread every turn
  • Can cheat expensive creatures onto the battlefield as 2/2s and flip them up later
  • Rewards lands-matter packages with extra land drops and ramp
  • Built-in graveyard filling synergizes with reanimation and flashback

Weaknesses

  • Manifest dread mills useful cards into the graveyard you may not want there
  • Only one manifest per turn, so flips beyond the first need additional land drops
  • Face-down 2/2s die easily to board wipes before you flip them
  • Wants consistent extra land drops or the engine sputters
  • Slow to actually close games without dedicated win conditions

Key Cards

  • Exploration — Extra land drops mean multiple landfall triggers, fueling manifests and face-up flips each turn.
  • Burgeoning — Drops several lands per turn off opponents' plays, maximizing Zimone's per-land triggers.
  • Scute Swarm — Each landfall makes copies and turns lands into engines, layering with Zimone's triggers.
  • Crucible of Worlds — Replays fetched and sacrificed lands to guarantee continual landfall.
  • Lotus Cobra — Turns each landfall into ramp, letting you flip face-up permanents for their mana cost immediately.
  • Court of Cunning — A repeatable advantage payoff that thrives in the grindy value plan Zimone enables.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the land-drop engine with Exploration, Burgeoning, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, and Oracle of Mul Daya so you reliably hit multiple landfall triggers and flips per turn. Add reanimation (Reanimate, Animate Dead) and fatties to exploit the graveyard filling, plus tutors like Crop Rotation and Worldly Tutor to find your engine pieces. Cap it with a focused win condition—Craterhoof Behemoth, a big flip-up bomb, or a mill/extra-turn package—so the value engine actually closes games.

Archetypes
