Why is this card good?
The cheapest sac-and-draw in black. One mana to draw two is excellent rate, and the forced creature sacrifice is a feature, not a bug, in the right decks. This is essentially a more efficient Sign in Blood with an upside attached.
Where it shines:
- Aristocrats — turn a dying or expendable creature into card advantage while triggering Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Bastion of Remembrance, etc.
- Token decks — sacrifice a 1/1 you don't need for a 1-mana Divination.
- Reanimator — pitch a fatty (Archon of Cruelty, Razaketh) to the graveyard, then bring it back. The sacrifice is the whole point.
It also rescues creatures from exile-based removal in response, replacing the body with two cards.
When to skip it: voltron, equipment, or any deck where each creature matters and you'd never want to sacrifice one. If you have no recursion or sac payoffs, the additional cost can feel awkward when you're behind on board. Otherwise, a cheap, reliable staple.
