Sphere of Safety

{4}{W}

Enchantment

Legal Salt 1.17Rank #669

Creatures can't attack you or planeswalkers you control unless their controller pays {X} for each of those creatures, where X is the number of enchantments you control.

Why is this card good?

Sphere of Safety is one of the best "soft Fog" effects in Commander, but only in the right shell. Each enchantment you control taxes attackers, and in a heavy enchantment deck that tax quickly becomes unpayable — opponents simply give up attacking you and turn their armies elsewhere. This is a staple in enchantress/pillowfort decks: commanders like Sythis, Tuvasa, Estrid, and Eutropia naturally flood the board with enchantments, so Sphere routinely demands 5-10+ mana per creature. Pairs beautifully with Ghostly Prison, Propaganda, and Ensnaring Bridge–style stax to make you the worst possible attack target while you durdle toward a combo or alt-win. The catch: it scales off enchantment count, so in a deck running only a handful of enchantments it's a near-dead {4}{W} that taxes a measly {1}-{2}. Don't run it as generic protection in a non-enchantment deck — it's a payoff, not a stand-alone defensive piece. Also note it does nothing against burn, mill, or combo, so don't rely on it as your only line of defense.
