Why is this card good?
The Meathook Massacre is one of the best black board wipes in Commander because it's scalable and sticks around. Unlike a one-shot Damnation, the enchantment stays on the battlefield, draining opponents and gaining you life every time creatures die afterward. That recurring trigger is what elevates it from "good wipe" to "format staple."
It shines in:
- Aristocrats — every sacrificed creature pings opponents and the static drain stacks with Blood Artist effects.
- Tokens/go-wide black decks — pick X to wipe their board while keeping your big stuff, then drain on the way out.
- Control/midrange black decks that just want a flexible, asymmetric-ish reset.
The asymmetry isn't perfect (your creatures die too), but you choose X to spare your relevant threats.
When to skip it: mono-creature-light decks where you rarely have a board to keep, or fast combo decks that don't want to spend mana on interaction. It's also pricey to cast big — a 4-toughness wipe costs six mana.
