Why is this card good?
Grim Tutor is one of the cleanest black tutors available: three mana, any card to hand, no card disadvantage beyond paying 3 life. In a 40-life format, that life cost is trivial, making it functionally a premium tutor on par with Demonic Tutor.
The catch is consistency-vs-power. Generic tutors-to-hand are best in combo and cEDH decks that want to assemble specific pieces — think Thassa's Oracle/Demonic Consultation shells, Najeela combos, or any deck with a known win condition you need to find reliably. They're also fine in value/midrange black decks that simply want their best card.
When NOT to play it: in casual, "goodstuff" 99-card decks, an unconditional tutor often makes games repetitive and adds little raw power — you're spending a card to find a card. If you're not building toward specific combos or silver-bullet answers, a creature-based tutor (Diabolic Intent) or just running more good cards is usually more fun and equally effective.
Bottom line: excellent in focused, combo-leaning lists; skippable in unfocused piles.
