Why is this card good?

Mithril Coat is one of the best protection pieces in any commander-centric deck, and it's wildly underplayed for what it does. The key word is flash. You hold up three mana and respond to a board wipe, targeted removal, or combat damage by flashing it in and auto-attaching to your commander for free — saving your investment at instant speed. It's also indestructible itself, so it survives the wipe and stays on the battlefield to keep protecting. That makes it far better than equipment that only matter once already attached. Who wants it: Voltron decks (Sram, Wilson, Galea), any deck built around a single key legendary commander, and grindy midrange decks that lean on their commander's value engine. Anything that hates losing its general to a Wrath. When to skip it: Indestructible doesn't stop exile, bounce, -X/-X effects, sacrifice, or theft — so it's weaker in metas full of Swords to Plowshares and Cyclonic Rift. Also dead in token/aristocrats shells with no important legendary to protect.

    Attaching an Equipment with its enters-the-battlefield triggered ability isn't the same as using its equip ability. You don't pay mana for the attachment, and the timing restrictions for equip abilities don't apply.

    If the target creature becomes an illegal target, the Equipment remains on the battlefield unattached.

    Mithril Coat doesn't enter the battlefield attached to a creature. Instead, the Equipment enters the battlefield and then a triggered ability attaches it to a creature. You may cast Mithril Coat even if you don't control any creatures.
