Why is this card good?
Tropical Island is one of the original dual lands, and it's the gold standard for fixing in any Simic (GU) deck. The reason it's worth the steep price tag is simple: it taps for both colors, enters untapped, and crucially has both basic land types — Forest and Island.
That typing is the real payoff. It's fetchable by Misty Rainforest, Flooded Strand, and other fetchlands, and it benefits from type-matters effects. Combined with no life loss (unlike shocks or painlands) and no tapped-land tempo hit, it's strictly better than nearly every other GU dual in a vacuum.
Any deck running both green and blue wants it: ramp/value Simic, flash/control, lands-matter, or competitive cEDH builds where every untapped, fetchable source matters.
When to skip it: budget is the only real reason. The functional gameplay gap between Tropical Island and a Breeding Pool or Hinterland Harbor is small in casual pods. Don't overpay for marginal upside unless you're optimizing fetch density or playing high-power.
