LegalCard DrawRank #557

Draw a card if an opponent has cast a blue or black spell this turn. Spells you control can't be countered this turn. You and permanents you control gain hexproof from blue and from black until end of turn. (You and they can't be the targets of blue or black spells or abilities your opponents control.)

Why is this card good?

Why it's good: One green mana is one of the best defensive spells in Commander. It blanks the most common interaction in the format — counterspells, targeted removal, and discard from blue and black decks — and frequently replaces itself by cantripping. Critically, it stops your spell from being countered and protects you, so it's a perfect "force through" answer to a key play. Where it shines: Any green combo or "big spell" deck that needs to resolve a haymaker through a blue control pilot. It's also a backbreaking response to Thoughtseize-style discard, board-wipe targeting, or a single Counterspell — a two-mana swing that often wins the stack exchange outright. It was banned in Pioneer/Modern for a reason. When not to play it: It's narrow — dead against red, white, and colorless interaction. In pods light on blue/black, it's a do-nothing card clogging your hand. Run it when your meta is counterspell- and removal-heavy, not as a default green include.

If your opponents have cast more than one blue or black spell, you still draw only one card as Veil of Summer resolves.

  • 2019-07-12

Veil of Summer has no effect until it resolves. It can be countered.

  • 2019-07-12

A spell or ability that counters spells can still target your spells after Veil of Summer resolves. When that spell or ability resolves, your spell won't be countered, but any additional effects of the countering spell or ability will still happen.
