The Commander

{1}, {T}: Put a fate counter on another target creature.

{W}, {T}: Exile target creature that has a fate counter on it, then return it to the battlefield under its owner's control.

{B}, {T}: Exile target creature that has a fate counter on it. Its controller draws two cards.

Guide

Gameplan

Triad of Fates is a slow-grind value engine that uses fate counters to flicker your own creatures for repeatable ETB triggers or to sacrifice them for cards, while also functioning as targeted removal against opponents. Each turn you tag a creature, then later blink it for value or exile it to draw two. You build incremental card and board advantage until you out-resource the table.

Strengths

  • Built-in repeatable removal that exiles problem creatures, dodging indestructible and death triggers
  • Flexible: same engine flickers your own ETB creatures for value or exiles them to refill your hand
  • Color identity has the best blink payoffs, reanimation, and card draw in the format
  • Fate counters can be staged proactively so you have answers ready at instant-ish speed

Weaknesses

  • Painfully slow: one tap per ability and a turn delay between counter and payoff
  • Heavily commander-dependent and a removal magnet; she dies and the engine stalls
  • No haste or untap means low throughput each turn, easily outpaced by faster decks
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and creature-light boards that starve the engine

Key Cards

  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Untaps Triad so you can both place a counter and blink/exile in the same turn, doubling her output.
  • Karmic Guide — A flicker target that reanimates a creature on each blink, turning the white ability into a recursion engine.
  • Sun Titan — Repeatedly returns cheap permanents whenever you flicker it, generating enormous incremental value.
  • Grave Pact — Each time you exile-and-redraw or sacrifice a creature elsewhere, opponents lose their board too.
  • Cloudstone Curio — Combos with cheap ETB creatures to bounce and replay, multiplying triggers around the Triad engine.
  • Anguished Unmaking — Catch-all removal to protect the slow engine from faster threats and resolve combos.

Upgrade Path

Add untap enablers (Thousand-Year Elixir, Aphetto Alchemist, Magewright's Stone) so the Triad does two things per turn, and lean into a tight ETB/aristocrats package with Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and Cloudstone Curio for closing power. Improve mana with fast rocks and protect your commander with Lightning Greaves and Swords to Plowshares; if you want to spike the deck, build toward a compact reanimator combo (Karmic Guide + Reveillark or a sac outlet) to convert the value engine into a deterministic win.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Out-grind the table with ETB value and card advantage, then win with overwhelming board presence
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist effects fueled by repeated sacrifices and flickers
  • ▸Combo loops like Karmic Guide plus a sac/flicker outlet for infinite recursion or drain
  • ▸Big finishers like Sun Titan or reanimated bombs closing out attrition-weary opponents

Archetypes

  • Blink/Flicker — The white ability is a repeatable flicker outlet that abuses ETB creatures for value every turn.
  • Aristocrats — The black ability turns creatures into two cards, pairing with sacrifice payoffs and death triggers.
  • Value Control — She doubles as removal and card advantage, grinding opponents out over a long game.
  • Reanimator — Black-white recursion plus blinking reanimators like Karmic Guide rebuilds boards endlessly.
