Mana value5Rank#13,228
BuildCard details

The Commander

At the beginning of combat on your turn, put a -1/-1 counter on up to one target creature.

{1}: Until your next turn, Volrath becomes a copy of target creature with a counter on it, except it's 7/5 and it has this ability.

Guide

Gameplan

Volrath seeds the board with -1/-1 counters each combat, then for {1} clones any creature with a counter on it (yours or an opponent's) while staying a 7/5 threat. You build a counters-matters shell that abuses both +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters, copying powerful ETB/static creatures and grinding opponents down while Volrath beats in.

Strengths

  • Repeatable -1/-1 counter removal from the command zone kills small creatures and shrinks blockers every turn
  • The copy ability is absurdly flexible—steal the best creature's abilities for just {1}, refreshing each turn
  • Lives in BUG, the best color trio for counter synergies, ramp, and interaction
  • Can profitably copy your own counter-laden value creatures or proliferate targets for huge swings

Weaknesses

  • Volrath is a build-around that does little without a counters package to support him
  • Costs 5 mana and dies to spot removal, interrupting the engine
  • The copy ability needs a creature with a counter, requiring setup before it comes online
  • Three-color manabase and counter doublers make consistent curves harder

Key Cards

  • Hex Parasite — Eats counters off creatures and can be copied; cleans up your -1/-1 counters or removes opponents' loyalty/+1+1 counters.
  • Crystalline Crawler — A counter-mana battery you can copy for {1} to ramp hard while keeping a 7/5 body.
  • Necroskitter — With Volrath dropping -1/-1 counters, you steal every creature that dies with one, snowballing the board.
  • Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider — Doubles -1/-1 counters from Volrath—one trigger kills a 2-toughness creature outright and supercharges proliferate.
  • Ozolith, the Shattered Spire — Adds and moves counters, fueling the counters theme and giving Volrath more targets.
  • Bloodspore Thrumcaster — Each creature you cast gets +1/+1 counters equal to its power, fast-building targets for Volrath to copy or remove.

Upgrade Path

Add counter doublers like Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider and proliferate enablers to make the -1/-1 trigger lethal and consistent. Build toward a Triskelion or Walking Ballista combo line with counter-shifting effects, and tighten the manabase with fast lands and ramp like Crystalline Crawler. Round out with strong copy targets—Consecrated Sphinx, Grave Titan, or Hullbreaker Horror—so each {1} activation generates a game-warping body.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Combat damage from a 7/5 Volrath copying evasive or powerful bodies
  • ▸Infinite combos copying Triskelion/Walking Ballista with -1/-1 counter manipulation
  • ▸Grinding the board to nothing with repeatable removal then closing with stolen value creatures
  • ▸Necroskitter/proliferate engines stealing the whole table's board

Archetypes

  • Counters Matters — Volrath generates -1/-1 counters and feeds off any counter to copy creatures, anchoring a full counters synergy shell.
  • Control — Repeatable removal via -1/-1 counters plus blue interaction lets you grind the board and protect your engine.
  • Combo — Copying creatures like Triskelion or Walking Ballista with counter loops enables infinite damage or removal combos.
  • Value/Toolbox — Volrath copies whichever utility creature you need each turn, acting as a flexible answer-and-threat machine.
