Fell the Profane // Fell Mire

Instant // Land

LegalRemovalRank #207

Destroy target creature or planeswalker.

As this land enters, you may pay 3 life. If you don't, it enters tapped.

Why is this card good?

Fell the Profane // Fell Mire is a textbook example of why modal double-faced lands (MDFCs) are so valuable in Commander. The headline is flexibility. Early game, when you're hungry for lands, it's a swamp that can come in untapped for 3 life. Later, when you have plenty of mana and a threat staring you down, it's unconditional removal that hits creatures and planeswalkers at instant speed. That second mode matters — you can hold up the kill at the perfect moment, blowing out an attack or stopping a combo piece. The real win is deckbuilding economy. It functionally lowers your land count without costing you a spell slot, smoothing out flood-vs-screw variance. Nearly any mono-black or black-inclusive deck wants this. Downsides: four mana for "destroy target" is mediocre rate as removal alone, and the land enters tapped unless you pay life. If your deck leans heavily on cheap, efficient interaction or you're in a fast cEDH pod, sleeker spot removal is better. But for most decks, the modality is pure upside.
