The Commander

{2}{U}, {T}: Each player mills three cards. Exile up to two creature cards put into graveyards this way. Create an X/X blue Zombie creature token, where X is the total power of the cards exiled this way.

Guide

Gameplan

Stitcher Geralf is a mono-blue self-mill/reanimator-adjacent commander who repeatedly mills everyone and stitches the biggest creatures from any graveyard into huge X/X Zombie tokens. You ramp toward casting and reactivating him each turn, build a board of fat Zombies, and grind value with mill payoffs. Win by swinging with oversized tokens, often pumped or unblockable, or by abusing the mill engine for combo and control.

Strengths

  • Reliably creates large bodies that scale off everyone's graveyards, including opponents' fatties.
  • Self-mill fuels graveyard payoffs, flashback, and reanimation while filling your yard fast.
  • Repeatable activated ability gives strong card-advantage-free board presence that dodges sorcery-speed creature removal somewhat.
  • Mono-blue gives access to the best counterspells, card draw, and protection in the format.

Weaknesses

  • Tokens have no inherent evasion or trample, so they can be chump-blocked all day.
  • Mills opponents too, feeding their own graveyard strategies and possibly empowering reanimator decks.
  • Slow without ramp; {2}{U} per activation plus a 5-mana commander is mana-hungry.
  • Board wipes erase a whole turn-cycle of token investment.
  • Mono-blue struggles with enchantment and artifact removal.

Key Cards

  • Rooftop Storm — Lets you cast Zombies for free, turning milled Zombies into a flood of bodies alongside Geralf's tokens.
  • Gravecrawler — A recurring Zombie that synergizes with sacrifice and tribal payoffs in a Zombie-heavy build.
  • Cyclonic Rift — The premier mono-blue blowout that lets your Zombie army swing in unblocked for the kill.
  • Diluvian Primordial — Casts opponents' best instants/sorceries from the graveyards Geralf has been filling.
  • Mystic Reflection — Turn a single token or creature into copies of your biggest Zombie for explosive boards.
  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Untaps Geralf to activate twice a turn and removes summoning-sickness pressure on tokens.

Upgrade Path

Add untap effects (Thousand-Year Elixir, Seedborn Muse, Murkfiend Liege) to double Geralf activations and ramp like Sol Ring, signets, and Nykthos to chain him out early. Lean into evasion or a wrath-into-Rift plan so your tokens actually connect, and include reanimation payoffs (Reanimate, Animate Dead, Rooftop Storm) to capitalize on milled bombs. To raise power further, layer in fast counterspell protection and a clean combo backup like Mystic Reflection plus token doublers for one-shot kills.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beating down with oversized X/X Zombie tokens, often after Cyclonic Rift or an evasion enabler.
  • ▸Going wide with Zombie tribal lords and anthems pumping Geralf's tokens.
  • ▸Reanimating bombs milled by Geralf to overwhelm the board.
  • ▸Mill-out finishers in graveyard-hostile metas, supported by repeated milling of all players.

Archetypes

  • Mill/Self-Mill Value — Geralf's ability fills graveyards every turn, enabling flashback, reanimation, and mill payoffs.
  • Zombie Tribal — He generates Zombie tokens that slot perfectly into a lord-and-anthem Zombie shell.
  • Reanimator — Milling fat creatures into graveyards sets up cheap reanimation spells instead of casting them.
  • Control — Mono-blue counterspells and bounce protect the grindy token engine until it takes over.
