The Commander

When this creature has flying, flip it.

Creatures you control have flying.

Guide

Gameplan

You're a mono-blue commander deck that flips a cheap 2-drop into Tobita, then gives your whole board evasive flying to close games in the air. Early turns ramp and protect the Student, get flying onto it (equipment, auras, instants), flip it, and then deploy creatures or tokens that all suddenly become unblockable-ish threats. Use blue's interaction to stall the ground while you swing over the top.

Strengths

  • Cheap two-mana commander that's easy to recast and gives a powerful anthem-like flying buff once flipped
  • Mono-U gives access to the best card draw, counterspells, and protection in the format
  • Turns wide token boards into evasive lethal threats with no extra investment
  • Flexible flip enabler—any flying source works, including instants for combat tricks

Weaknesses

  • Front side does nothing on its own; needs an external flying source to flip
  • Mono-blue lacks efficient removal and has no real way to recover board wipes besides bounce/counters
  • Vulnerable to flyers, reach creatures, and ground-based stax that blue can't easily answer
  • Win is grindy—relies on connecting in combat repeatedly rather than explosive damage

Key Cards

  • Steel of the Godhead — Grants flying to flip Tobita while also pumping and lifelinking your evasive attacker.
  • Rogue's Passage — Backup evasion and a way to push a single huge flyer through for big chunks of damage.
  • Coastal Piracy — Turns your now-evasive, unblocked attackers into a constant stream of cards.
  • Cyclonic Rift — Mono-blue's premier blowout, clearing blockers so your flying army connects for lethal.
  • Brave the Elements — Cheap flying-granter and protection spell to both flip and shield your team.

Upgrade Path

Add more efficient repeatable flying-granters and protection (Whispersilk Cloak, Trailblazer's Boots, Swiftfoot Boots) so flipping and keeping Tobita is reliable, and lean into a token engine (Talrand, Sky Summoner, Murmuring Mystic) to maximize the anthem. Round out with blue's best card advantage and free interaction (Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Force of Will, Pact of Negation) to protect your alpha strike. For higher power, include unblockable-payoff finishers and tutors to assemble your evasion package faster.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with a flying token swarm after Tobita's anthem
  • ▸Voltron damage with an evasive equipped commander or single big flyer
  • ▸Cyclonic Rift overload followed by an unblocked aerial assault
  • ▸Incremental flying damage backed by counterspells protecting the board

Archetypes

  • Tokens — Tobita makes a wide token board fly, converting go-wide blue tokens into evasive damage.
  • Voltron — The flip itself rewards suiting up one creature with flying-granting equipment and auras.
  • Tempo/Control — Mono-blue counters and bounce let you stall while chipping in with evasive threats.
  • Spellslinger — Instant-speed flying grants and card draw support a tempo-spell shell around the flip.
