Why is this card good?
Abrupt Decay is premium interaction for any Golgari-adjacent deck, and its value comes from flexibility plus uncounterability.
Two mana, instant speed, "can't be countered" — this answers a huge swath of problematic permanents: mana rocks (Sol Ring, Signets), oppressive low-cost enchantments (Rhystic Study, Smothering Tithe, Esper Sentinel), early creatures, planeswalkers under 3 MV, and combo pieces. The fact it dodges counterspells makes it especially clutch in competitive pods where blue interaction is everywhere.
Wants it: cEDH and high-power BG/Sultai/Jund decks that prize cheap, efficient answers. Stax and aristocrats decks love clearing rocks and value engines. Anyone leaning on tight, instant-speed disruption.
When NOT to play it: the MV 3-or-less cap is a real ceiling. In higher-power tables, the scary stuff — Cyclonic Rift, Craterhoof, big bombs, expensive commanders — sits above that line, leaving Decay stranded. Casual/battlecruiser decks fighting fat threats want Beast Within or Putrefy instead. Decay rewards metas full of cheap engines, not haymakers.
