Why is this card good?
Evolution Sage turns every land drop into a proliferate, which is deceptively powerful in the right shell. The key is that it doesn't just add counters to your own things — it proliferates everything, so it scales with how many counter-based engines you're running.
Where it shines:
- +1/+1 counters / superfriends decks led by commanders like Ezuri, Atraxa, or Hamza — pump creatures and tick up planeswalker loyalty every turn.
- Land-heavy ramp decks with extra land drops (Azusa, Exploration, fetchlands) that effectively proliferate multiple times per turn.
- Saga / charge counter / energy strategies that benefit from accelerating counters.
The combo with extra land-drop effects is what elevates it from cute to genuinely strong — three lands a turn means three proliferates.
When not to play it: if your deck has few counters to interact with, it's just a 2/3 vanilla body. It also helps your opponents' counters (their planeswalkers, suspends), so be mindful. Skip it outside dedicated counter or landfall-ramp builds.
