When Growing Rites of Itlimoc enters, look at the top four cards of your library. You may reveal a creature card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.

At the beginning of your end step, if you control four or more creatures, transform Growing Rites of Itlimoc.

(Transforms from Growing Rites of Itlimoc.)

Why is this card good?

Effectively a green Gaea's Cradle on a budget. The front side is a 3-mana enchantment that digs four deep for a creature, and once you control four or more creatures, it flips into a land that taps for green equal to your creature count. In go-wide green decks that's trivially five, ten, even twenty mana — explosive ramp that fuels game-ending X-spells, overruns, or big eldrazi. Who wants it: any creature-dense green deck. Token strategies (Ghave, Rhys, Jetmir), elfball/mana-doublers, +1/+1 counter decks, and stompy ramp shells all flip it reliably and abuse the payoff. It's especially nasty alongside Craterhoof Behemoth or Finale of Devastation. Caveats: it enters as an enchantment, so it's slow — you spend mana turn one, then wait a full turn cycle to flip, and it can be wiped before paying off. In low-creature or spellslinger green decks it's a clunky cantrip that never transforms. It also doesn't add the green until after flipping, so don't expect immediate ramp. Run it anywhere you reliably field four-plus creatures.

The last ability of Growing Rites of Itlimoc doesn't trigger if you don't control four or more creatures as your end step begins. If you don't control four or more creatures as it resolves, it does nothing.

  • 2017-09-29

If you control a creature that will be removed from the battlefield "at the beginning of the next end step," you can resolve the ability of Growing Rites of Itlimoc before that creature leaves the battlefield.

  • 2017-09-29

If you gain control of a creature "until end of turn," or if a noncreature permanent you control becomes a creature "until end of turn," it'll be a creature under your control through the entire end step.
