Why is this card good?
Young Pyromancer is one of the best two-drop payoffs for spellslinger decks, turning every cantrip, removal spell, and ritual into a free body. The value compounds fast: in a deck packed with cheap instants and sorceries, you'll flood the board over a couple turns, and those tokens feed everything from go-wide aggro to sacrifice synergies.
Who wants it:
- Spellslinger commanders like Krark/Sakashima, Niv-Mizzet, Veyran (who doubles the triggers via magecraft), or Kalamax.
- Aristocrats shells in Rakdos/Mardu that want fodder for Blood Artist-style drains.
- Token decks that pair these Elementals with Impact Tremors, Purphoros, or anthem effects.
When to skip it: If your deck isn't running ~15+ instants and sorceries, it's just a vanilla 2/1. Big-mana ramp, creature-centric, or artifact decks get almost nothing from it. It's also a removal magnet, so don't lean on it as your sole engine — it dies to everything.
Best in dedicated, low-curve spell decks where the trigger fires every turn.
