The Commander

At the beginning of your end step, draw a card for each card type among spells you've cast this turn.

Guide

Gameplan

April rewards casting a diverse spread of spell types each turn—an instant, a sorcery, an artifact, a creature, an enchantment—then refills your hand on your end step based on how many distinct card types you cast. You play a spellslinger/storm-lite control game, durdling on artifacts and cheap spells to keep the cards flowing, then convert that card advantage into a game-ending combo or a big payoff.

Strengths

  • Snowballing card advantage that's largely self-sufficient in mono-blue.
  • Mono-color consistency makes mana and fixing trivial.
  • Naturally encourages low-curve, interactive builds that double as protection and value.
  • Synergizes with cost reducers and free spells to maximize type diversity each turn.

Weaknesses

  • Reliant on the commander sticking around; she's a removal magnet with no built-in protection.
  • Mono-blue lacks efficient creature removal and can't easily clear the board.
  • Drawing is end-step only, so she doesn't help you survive an explosive turn that kills you first.
  • Casting many types per turn is demanding—hands clog without good sequencing or cost reduction.

Key Cards

  • Mystic Remora — Cheap repeatable card draw that stretches your advantage while you assemble diverse turns.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Turns the storm of spells you're casting anyway into a 50-life laser to win out of nowhere.
  • The Reality Chip — An artifact that lets you play off the top, helping you keep multiple types flowing each turn.
  • Thousand-Year Storm — Copies every spell, multiplying your storm count and value engines explosively.
  • Teferi's Ageless Insight — Doubles April's already-large end-step draw for absurd refuel.
  • Swan Song — Cheap counterspell that protects April and adds an instant to your type count.

Upgrade Path

Add cost reducers and rituals (Goblin Electromancer-style effects, Jeska's Will, Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter) so you can routinely cast all five+ spell types in a single turn for maximum draw. Layer in draw doublers (Teferi's Ageless Insight, Alhammarret's Archive) and protection (Heroic Intervention's blue cousins, counter backup) to keep April safe, then settle on a tight finisher like Aetherflux Reservoir or Thassa's Oracle to close before the table stabilizes.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aetherflux Reservoir burning the table after a high-storm turn.
  • ▸Grinding everyone out with overwhelming card advantage into a control finisher like Jin-Gitaxias or a mill/laboratory engine.
  • ▸Assembling an infinite mana or storm combo enabled by the cards April digs you into.
  • ▸Casting a massive X-spell or extra-turn chain off the refueled hand.

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger — She directly pays you for casting many different spell types in a turn, rewarding a low-curve instant/sorcery shell.
  • Control — Mono-blue counters and bounce keep you alive while April out-draws the table.
  • Combo — The huge card flow finds and fuels finishers like Aetherflux Reservoir or infinite-mana loops.
  • Artifacts — Cheap artifacts add an easy extra card type each turn and enable cost-reduction and storm payoffs.
