BuildCard details

The Commander

Deathtouch (Any amount of damage this deals to a creature is enough to destroy it.)

{1}, Sacrifice another creature: You gain life equal to the sacrificed creature's toughness.

{1}{W}{B}, Sacrifice another creature: Exile target nonland permanent. Activate only if you have at least 10 life more than your starting life total.

Guide

Gameplan

Ayli is a sacrifice engine that converts your creatures into life and targeted removal. You build a board, fuel Ayli's first ability to gain life and trigger payoffs, then use the second ability to exile any problematic nonland permanent once you're above 50 life. The deck grinds value through aristocrats synergies before assembling a combo or simply outvaluing the table.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, unconditional exile removal hits commanders, planeswalkers, and indestructible threats
  • Cheap two-mana commander that's hard to answer permanently and easy to recast
  • Life gain enables a whole package of payoffs and keeps you out of burn/aggro range
  • Deathtouch makes Ayli a strong blocker and deters attacks
  • BW gives access to the best tutors, reanimation, and recursion in the format

Weaknesses

  • Exile ability is gated behind a 10-life threshold, slow to come online without payoffs
  • Needs a steady stream of creatures to sacrifice, vulnerable to board wipes
  • Relatively low ceiling without combo support; can durdle on raw value
  • Sacrifice loops require multiple pieces, making the deck assembly-dependent
  • Color identity lacks card draw and ramp compared to other pairings

Key Cards

  • Sun Titan — Recurs Ayli's fodder and key two-or-less permanents every attack, fueling endless sacrifice value.
  • Reveillark — Returns small creatures from the graveyard to fuel repeated sacrifices and enable persistence loops.
  • Karmic Guide — Combos with Reveillark and a sac outlet for infinite recursion and aristocrats payoffs.
  • Blood Artist — Turns every sacrifice into drain, providing a clear win condition and incidental life gain.
  • Bastion of Remembrance — A second, enchantment-based Blood Artist that closes games as creatures die in bulk.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that ramps and enables combo loops without paying Ayli's mana.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Snowballs your token-heavy board and pairs with sacrifice fodder for explosive value.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and free sacrifice outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Tower, Goblin Bombardment) so Ayli's tax doesn't bottleneck loops. Lean into a compact combo like Reveillark + Karmic Guide + sac outlet + Blood Artist, backed by tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Diabolic Intent) to assemble it consistently. Finally, tighten removal and add efficient recursion (Sun Titan, Reanimate, Animate Dead) to recover from board wipes and keep the engine running.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Drain the table with Blood Artist effects during a sacrifice loop
  • ▸Infinite combo via Reveillark/Karmic Guide plus a free sac outlet and aristocrat payoff
  • ▸Aetherflux Reservoir burst kill off accumulated life gain
  • ▸Exile every relevant permanent and grind out a wide token board

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Ayli is a built-in sacrifice outlet that pairs perfectly with death-trigger payoffs like Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat.
  • Lifegain — The first ability constantly gains life, supporting payoffs like Aetherflux Reservoir and turning life into a resource.
  • Reanimator — BW recursion brings back big creatures to sacrifice and rebuy, turning the graveyard into an engine.
  • Combo — Free sacrifice loops plus drain effects assemble repeatable life loss or infinite life for a clean kill.
