BuildCard details

The Commander

At the beginning of combat on your turn, choose target nonland permanent you control. Until end of turn, it becomes a Vehicle artifact with base power and toughness each equal to its mana value, and it gains crew 2 and "Crash Land — Whenever this Vehicle deals damage, roll a six-sided die. If the result is equal to this Vehicle's mana value, sacrifice this Vehicle, then it deals that much damage to any target."

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Captain Rex Nebula, then each combat turn one of your high-mana-value noncreature permanents (an enchantment, artifact, or planeswalker) into a beefy attacking Vehicle whose stats equal its mana value. Crew it for 2, swing for big damage, and let Crash Land's die roll occasionally nuke a player or threat for extra reach. You win by stacking expensive permanents that double as evasive beaters and grinding incremental damage.

Strengths

  • Turns otherwise-defensive permanents (mana rocks, enchantments, planeswalkers) into surprise attackers, getting double duty out of every card.
  • Scales naturally—the bigger your bombs, the bigger the Vehicle, with no extra investment beyond crew 2.
  • Crash Land provides free reach and removal upside, and you choose what to animate based on the board.
  • RW gives access to cheap, efficient crew creatures, equipment, and combat tricks.

Weaknesses

  • Animated permanents become creatures, so they die to creature removal and board wipes during combat.
  • Crash Land is random and sacrifices the Vehicle, so you can lose key permanents to bad die rolls.
  • Relies heavily on the commander; without Rex on board the deck's payoff engine stalls.
  • Needs a critical mass of high-MV permanents to make Vehicles meaningfully large, which can be clunky and mana-hungry.

Key Cards

  • Krark-Clan Ironworks — A high-MV artifact engine that can attack as a Vehicle and feed sacrifice value when Crash Land fires.
  • Cloudstone Curio — Recurs the permanents you animate or that get sacrificed, smoothing the variance of Crash Land.
  • Reconnaissance — Lets your animated Vehicles attack safely and dodge bad blocks while still triggering combat and Crash Land.
  • Mishra's Bauble — Cheap artifact you can animate as a tiny disposable attacker that still triggers combat synergies.
  • Smothering Tithe — A high-MV enchantment that ramps you toward bigger bombs and can itself swing as a sizable Vehicle.
  • Sram, Senior Edificer — Crews for 2 and refills your hand off the equipment and auras you load onto your animated threats.
  • Krenko, Mob Boss — Generates a swarm of cheap crew bodies so you can always activate crew 2.

Upgrade Path

Raise your average noncreature mana value with impactful bombs (e.g., Smothering Tithe, big artifacts, planeswalkers) so animated Vehicles hit harder, and add evasion and protection like Reconnaissance and ward effects. Lean into recursion (Cloudstone Curio, Brought Back) to negate Crash Land sacrifices, and incorporate die-roll manipulation to control when Crash Land triggers. Tighten the mana base and add cheap, repeatable crew creatures so you never miss an attack step.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swinging with multiple oversized animated permanents for lethal commander-damage-style beatdown.
  • ▸Crash Land die rolls dealing repeated direct damage to opponents' faces.
  • ▸A Voltron-style animated permanent loaded with equipment delivering a one-shot kill.
  • ▸Grinding the table down through incremental Vehicle attacks plus sacrifice value.

Archetypes

  • Big Mana / Permanents Matter — Rex rewards loading the board with expensive noncreature permanents that become huge Vehicles each turn.
  • Voltron — You can repeatedly animate the same key permanent and stack equipment and auras onto it for one-shot damage.
  • Aristocrats/Value — Crash Land's forced sacrifices pair with recursion and death-trigger payoffs to grind incremental value.
  • Dice/Chaos Synergy — The Crash Land die roll plugs into red 'roll a d6' support for added damage and reliability.
