BuildCard details

The Commander

When Exdeath enters, you gain 3 life.

At the beginning of your end step, if there are six or more permanent cards in your graveyard, transform Exdeath.

Trample

Neo Exdeath's power is equal to the number of permanent cards in your graveyard.

Guide

Gameplan

Exdeath wants permanent cards stacked in your graveyard so it flips into Neo Exdeath, a trampling beater whose power scales with your yard. Mill yourself, sacrifice tokens, cycle and discard fodder, then transform on an end step and swing for lethal commander damage. Until then, lean on BG's recursion and value engines to grind incremental advantage.

Strengths

  • Cheap three-mana commander that gains life and is easy to recast
  • Self-mill and sacrifice synergies fuel both the graveyard and the transform condition
  • Neo Exdeath can become a one- or two-shot trample threat with a big enough yard
  • Deep black/green graveyard recursion makes resources hard to exhaust

Weaknesses

  • Graveyard hate (Bojuka Bog, Rest in Peace) shrinks Neo Exdeath and breaks the plan
  • Neo Exdeath has no built-in evasion beyond trample and is vulnerable to removal/chump blocks
  • Front side does almost nothing offensively until you hit six permanents in the yard
  • No card advantage stapled to the commander itself—relies on supporting pieces
  • The transform only checks at your end step, telegraphing the threat to opponents

Key Cards

  • Stitcher's Supplier — Mills permanents into the yard on entry and death, accelerating the flip.
  • Splendid Reclamation — Returns milled lands to play, ramping while filling the graveyard with permanent cards.
  • Golgari Grave-Troll — Dredge stocks the yard fast and provides a recurring body.
  • Lightning Greaves — Haste and protection let a freshly flipped Neo Exdeath swing immediately and dodge removal.
  • Buried Alive — Dumps three permanents into the graveyard at once toward the six-card threshold.
  • Meren of Clan Nel Toth — Loops sacrifice fodder, refilling the yard while reanimating value creatures.

Upgrade Path

Add fast self-mill (Hermit Druid, Mesmeric Orb, Altar of Dementia) to flip reliably by turn four or five, and protect/enable Neo Exdeath with Swiftfoot Boots, Rogue's Passage, and trample-doublers like Berserk for one-shot kills. Tighten the mana with Golgari fixing and tutors (Entomb, Jarad's Orders) and include a backup aristocrats line so graveyard hate doesn't leave you without a plan.

Win Conditions

Archetypes

  • Self-Mill / Graveyard Value — Permanent cards in the yard both fuel the transform and power Neo Exdeath.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrificing tokens and creatures feeds the graveyard while draining opponents.
  • Reanimator — BG can mill fatties and reanimate them, using the yard as a resource engine.
  • Voltron — A flipped Neo Exdeath with trample and big power closes games via commander damage.
