BuildCard details

The Commander

{2}{U}, Discard a card: Counter target spell if it has the same mana value as the discarded card.

Guide

Gameplan

Hisoka is a control commander who taxes the table by repeatedly countering spells: pay {2}{U}, pitch a card whose mana value matches the target, and it's gone. You durdle behind permission and value engines, grind to a critical mass of mana and card advantage, then close with a big finisher or a combo while your discard outlet doubles as a soft hard-counter on demand.

Strengths

  • Repeatable countermagic from the command zone that doesn't cost a card from hand if you reload (loot/draw heavy decks fuel it)
  • Mono-blue gives access to the deepest counterspell, card-draw, and tutor suites in the format
  • Discard as a cost has synergy with graveyard/madness/flashback payoffs and 'cards in graveyard matter' themes
  • Hard to interact with — it's an activated ability, not a spell, so it dodges spell-based answers

Weaknesses

  • Color-screwed politically: mono-blue means no removal for resolved permanents and no real life gain or board wipes outside artifacts/sweepers like Cyclonic Rift
  • The counter is conditional — you must hold a card of the exact matching mana value, so it whiffs against off-curve spells
  • Costs four mana per counter ({2}{U} plus the card), making it slow and resource-hungry
  • Removing Hisoka removes your whole engine; he's a 4-mana 2/2 with no protection built in
  • Hand-size dependent — you can be locked out by discard, Hullbreacher effects, or simply running low

Key Cards

  • Cyclonic Rift — Mono-blue's premier one-sided board reset and one of the few ways the deck can answer resolved threats.
  • Rhystic Study — Refills your hand so you always have fodder to pitch to Hisoka's counter.
  • Mystic Remora — Cheap early card advantage that keeps your discard outlet stocked for the matching-MV counter.
  • Snapcaster Mage — Lets you reuse counters and cantrips, smoothing out the conditional nature of Hisoka's ability.
  • Brainstorm — Card selection to ensure you hold the exact mana value you need to discard at the right moment.
  • Consecrated Sphinx — A finisher and an engine that buries opponents in cards to fuel both counters and threats.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into card advantage (Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Consecrated Sphinx) so you never run dry on discard fodder, and add cheap selection (Ponder, Preordain, Brainstorm) to guarantee matching mana values. Tighten the win toward a compact combo — Lab Maniac plus a draw-your-library spell, or a mill package with Bruvac — so the control shell has a fast, protectable kill. Finally, add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault) and protective counters (Mana Drain, Force of Negation) to keep pace with higher-power tables.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Resolve a hard-to-answer finisher (Consecrated Sphinx, Blightsteel Colossus, or a big flier) and protect it with counters
  • ▸Mill or deck the table out with effects like Bruvac the Grandiloquent plus Maddening Cacophony
  • ▸Assemble a draw-your-deck combo and win with Laboratory Maniac or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries
  • ▸Grind opponents out of resources behind permission until an Aetherflux Reservoir or commander damage closes

Archetypes

  • Control — Hisoka provides recurring permission, letting you stall the table and win late with inevitability.
  • Spellslinger — A spell-dense deck naturally holds varied mana values to match and counter incoming threats.
  • Mill — Mono-blue can lean into a mill plan while Hisoka protects your engine and stops removal.
  • Combo — Permission from the command zone shields a dedicated combo line, like Laboratory Maniac plus a draw spell.
