BuildCard details

The Commander

Vanishing 3

Imprint — When Idris enters, exile another artifact you control until Idris leaves the battlefield.

Idris has all activated and triggered abilities of the exiled card and gets +X/+X, where X is the exiled card's mana value.

Guide

Gameplan

Idris enters and imprints one of your artifacts, becoming a beater that wears that artifact's activated and triggered abilities while gaining +X/+X equal to its mana value. You ramp into a big artifact (Equipment, mana rocks with abilities, or busted artifact engines), then leverage Idris as both a value engine and an evasive threat. The catch is Vanishing 3, so you're racing a clock and want recursion or ways to recast and re-imprint each turn.

Strengths

  • Turns any high-value artifact into a built-in commander ability, letting you reuse powerful effects from the command zone
  • Becomes a sizable evasive or activated-ability beater for cheap (3 mana) with the right imprint
  • Izzet gives deep access to artifact tutors, card draw, counterspells, and copy/recursion effects
  • Flexible turn to turn — you can re-imprint a different artifact each time Idris re-enters

Weaknesses

  • Vanishing 3 means Idris is on a hard timer and demands constant recasting, racking up commander tax
  • Two-for-one vulnerable: removing Idris while it has imprinted an artifact can blow you out, though the artifact returns
  • Color identity lacks reliable artifact recursion outside blue bounce, so losing pieces hurts
  • Imprint only copies abilities, not static buffs or color/keyword grants from the artifact itself
  • Setup-heavy and slow against fast combo or aggressive boards

Key Cards

  • Lightning Greaves — Cheap imprint that gives Idris haste and shroud, protecting your timer-bound commander while letting it attack immediately.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Imprint it and Idris gains the life-gain trigger and the 50-life laser, turning storm-y turns into a wincon you carry in the command zone.
  • Sword of the Animist — Imprinting an Equipment grants its combat-damage trigger to Idris itself with no equip needed, ramping you each swing.
  • Mind's Desire — Not artifact, but as an example of explosive payoffs—better to note: Idris loves high-MV artifacts for the big +X/+X.
  • Mystic Forge — Imprint grants top-of-library artifact/colorless casting, turning Idris into a card-advantage engine.
  • Inspiring Statuary — Provides improvise so you can pay the rising commander tax and recast Idris repeatedly.

Upgrade Path

Add cheap artifact tutors (Whir of Invention, Inventors' Fair, Reshape) to consistently find the right imprint, plus protection and haste enablers like Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots. Build around the Vanishing clock with blink/flicker and recast enablers (Inspiring Statuary, cost reducers) so re-imprinting is seamless, and lean into a dedicated artifact combo finish such as Aetherflux Reservoir with cheap spell chains or Isochron Scepter loops.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Carry a payoff artifact like Aetherflux Reservoir or Mechanized Production and win through its copied ability
  • ▸Voltron damage with imprinted Equipment triggers and evasion
  • ▸Generate overwhelming card and mana advantage via copied engine artifacts, then close with big spells

Archetypes

  • Artifacts (Big Mana / Value) — Idris wants expensive, ability-rich artifacts to copy and to boost its size, rewarding an artifact-dense shell.
  • Voltron — Imprinting Equipment grants their triggers and stats directly to Idris, building a self-equipping evasive threat.
  • Spellslinger/Combo — Izzet card draw and rituals let you chain spells and imprint payoff artifacts like Aetherflux Reservoir for combo finishes.
  • Blink/Flicker — Flickering Idris (or letting it Vanish out) re-triggers Imprint to swap to the best artifact for the situation.
