BuildCard details

The Commander

Each historic card in your hand has cycling {2}{W}. ({2}{W}, Discard that card: Draw a card.)

Whenever you cycle a card, put a +1/+1 counter on Jo Grant.

Doctor's companion (You can have two commanders if the other is the Doctor.)

Guide

Gameplan

Jo Grant turns your historic cards (artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas) into cyclable draw engines for {2}{W}, smoothing draws while growing into a beater. Pair her with a Doctor partner to get into blue/other colors, then build a cycling-matters shell that abuses the repeated discard-and-draw triggers for value, counters, and damage.

Strengths

  • Gives mono-white a reliable, repeatable card-filtering engine, something the color historically lacks.
  • Cycling triggers her counters and any 'whenever you cycle' payoffs, generating layered value from a single mechanic.
  • Doctor's companion lets you splash a second color and access far better cycling/draw payoffs.
  • Cheap 3-mana commander that snowballs into a real threat with counters.

Weaknesses

  • Cycling costs {2}{W} each, which is mana-hungry and slow without cost reducers.
  • Mono-white alone has thin payoffs; she really wants a Doctor partner to shine.
  • Her counters do nothing if she's removed, and white struggles to protect a single creature.
  • No inherent evasion or trample, so the growing body can stall against go-wide boards.

Key Cards

  • Astral Drift — Turns every cycle into a flicker engine, doubling the value of your historic cards and any ETB creatures.
  • New Perspectives — Makes all your historic-card cycling free, letting Jo's triggers and counters chain explosively.
  • Teferi's Ageless Insight — Doubles cards drawn from cycling, accelerating your engine massively.
  • The Tenth Doctor — A strong Doctor partner whose time counters synergize with repeated card draw and tempo.
  • Drannith Stinger — Pings each opponent every time you cycle, turning the engine into a direct win condition.
  • Idol of Oblivion — A historic artifact that draws cards off your growing token/creature board while being cyclable itself.

Upgrade Path

Pair her with a Doctor (like The Tenth Doctor or Wilson, Refined Grizzly's white-friendly options) to open a second color and far deeper cycling payoffs. Add cost reducers and free-cycling enablers (New Perspectives, Vizier of Tumbling Sands effects), counter doublers, and cycle-trigger pingers to convert raw card flow into a win. Lean on protection (Heroic Intervention-style white pieces, Swiftfoot Boots) to keep Jo on the board and snowballing.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Cycle-trigger pingers (Drannith Stinger, Drannith Healer + redirection) dealing incremental damage each cycle.
  • ▸Jo herself swinging as an oversized, counter-fueled threat with anthems or evasion.
  • ▸Out-valuing the table via massive card advantage, then closing with go-wide tokens.
  • ▸Combo loops with New Perspectives and free-cycle payoffs for explosive turns.

Archetypes

  • Cycling Value — Jo makes historic cards cyclable and rewards each cycle, anchoring a draw-and-trigger engine.
  • Blink/Flicker — With Astral Drift, cycling becomes repeatable ETB flicker value from your artifacts and legends.
  • Aristocrats/Pinger Combo — Cycle-trigger payoffs like Drannith Stinger and counter doublers turn the engine into damage.
  • Voltron — Jo accumulates +1/+1 counters from every cycle, eventually becoming a hard-to-block finisher.
