Artifact

Legal Salt 1.19RampRank #560

This artifact doesn't untap during your untap step.

{T}: Add {C}{C}{C}.

{3}: Untap this artifact.

Why is this card good?

Basalt Monolith is a colorless mana rock that produces three colorless mana for a three-mana investment — net neutral on the turn it enters, but a ramp engine on subsequent turns. Its real value comes from two angles. First, it's a staple infinite-mana combo piece: pair it with Rings of Brighthearth or a cost-reducer, and the untap loop generates unlimited colorless mana (great with Banefire, Walking Ballista, or X-spell finishers). Second, it fuels artifact synergies — it's an artifact for affinity, improvise, Urza, and metalcraft decks, and it taps for big colorless payloads in eldrazi or Karn shells. Play it in colorless-hungry decks: eldrazi ramp, big-mana artifact decks, and combo lists running Rings/Power Artifact/Dramatic Reversal-style engines. Don't play it in three-color-intensive decks that need colored mana — its output is purely colorless and awkward for casting spells. A plain rock like Arcane Signet or Fellwar Stone serves better there. It's a combo/colorless tool, not generic ramp.

Basalt Monolith's last ability can untap it as often as you can pay for it. If you believe you've found a way to generate an unbounded amount of mana with it, you're probably right.
