Emerald Medallion

{2}

Artifact

LegalRank #604

Green spells you cast cost {1} less to cast.

Why is this card good?

Emerald Medallion is a quiet workhorse in green decks that lean heavily on a single color. The medallions are weaker than rocks like Signets or Arcane Signet because they don't ramp on their own — they only discount, and only one color. But in mono-green or green-heavy decks, that {1}-off every green spell compounds fast across a turn, effectively giving you free mana every time you cast multiple spells. Who wants it: Mono-green ramp/stompy decks, green spellslinger or +1/+1 counter builds, and any deck flooding the board with green creatures each turn (token strategies, elf tribal). The more green pips you cast per turn, the better it scales. When NOT to play it: Two- or three-color green decks where many spells aren't green — the discount whiffs too often, and you'd rather run a Signet that fixes colors and adds mana. It also does nothing the turn you play it, so slower, grindy lists value it more than aggressive ones.

    The ability doesn't change the mana cost or mana value of any spell. It changes only the total cost you pay.

  • 2023-07-28

    The ability can't reduce the amount of colored mana you pay for a spell. It reduces only the generic mana component of that cost.

    If there are additional costs to cast a spell, or if the cost to cast a spell is increased by an effect (such as the one created by Thalia, Guardian of Thraben's ability), apply those increases before applying cost reductions.

  • 2023-07-28

    The cost reduction can apply to alternative costs such as flashback costs.

    If a spell you cast has {X} in its mana cost, you choose the value of X before calculating the spell's total cost.
