Ruby Medallion

{2}

Artifact

LegalRank #316

Red spells you cast cost {1} less to cast.

Why is this card good?

Ruby Medallion is a quietly excellent ramp piece for mono-red and red-heavy decks. Unlike a Sol Ring or mana rock, it doesn't add mana — it cheapens every red spell you cast, which compounds hard over a long game. Cast three red spells in a turn and you've effectively generated three mana. The catch: it only discounts red spells, so its value scales directly with how mono-red your deck is. In dedicated mono-red builds (Krenko, Torbran, Zada, Birgi spellslinger) it's near-best-in-slot, and it's a key enabler for storm-style turns where you're chaining cheap red spells. Pair it with cost-reducers like Birgi or other Medallions and your spells start going off. When to skip it: multicolor decks where a big chunk of your spells aren't red — a generic mana rock often serves you better there. It also does nothing the turn it lands (no immediate mana), so slower or low-spell-count decks won't feel it. Want raw spell density to make it pay off.

    If a spell you cast has {X} in its mana cost, you choose the value of X before calculating the spell's total cost.

  • 2023-07-28

    The ability doesn't change the mana cost or mana value of any spell. It changes only the total cost you pay.

  • 2023-07-28

    The ability can't reduce the amount of colored mana you pay for a spell. It reduces only the generic mana component of that cost.

  • 2023-07-28

    If there are additional costs to cast a spell, or if the cost to cast a spell is increased by an effect (such as the one created by Thalia, Guardian of Thraben's ability), apply those increases before applying cost reductions.

  • 2023-07-28

    The cost reduction can apply to alternative costs such as flashback costs.
